I've actually never worked on a car with the early style heat shield & didn't realize it uses one of the torque tube bolts! Sounds like the later style is significantly easier to R&R!
Mine was originally missing & the dealer only sells the later style. I just know for me, that one main mounting ...

Re: Starter heat shields - early vs late
Let me know if you have trouble fitting a socket on one of the bolts with the newer style heat shield. I find it's a tight fit and a wrench has to be used which doesn't allow a real good "bite" IMO. The later cars were fitted with an Allen head bolt & I've wondered if this is the reason why.

Re: Coolant Leak at Oil Filter Housing Console
Yeah, I actually have a collection of these consoles (long story). I'm just hesitant to switch over because I'd feel the need to disassemble to clean the innards and then test the thermostat in a pot of boiling peanut oil. I ordered a tube of Curil T (now Curil T2) and will give it a try. I'm not ...

Re: Coolant Leak at Oil Filter Housing Console
Why anti-sealant? Modern day sealants do a wonderful job. Now, I wouldn't suggest running a 3/8in. bead around the perimeter, but a little to fill-in the channel will not cause any harm. Hate to say Tom...that pitting isn't pretty I'd be tempted to look for another housing in better condition.

Re: Coolant Leak at Oil Filter Housing Console
Tom, thanks for posting that picture. Interesting as I've never seen that one before.
I had to replace my oil cooler hoses too and recall stubby 27mm & 32mm wrenches made the job easier.

Re: Case of the missing coolant
Vent screw torque is 9-11 ft. lbs. per the tech spec manual. I'd definitely do some more testing before tearing into a head gasket. I agree with Tom most likely the oil cooler seals.

Re: Coolant Leak at Oil Filter Housing Console
This is why it takes me so long to fix anything... As I worked to get to the oil filter console, I was horrified to see rust on this little bracket that holds the brake sensor wire clip up where the sway bar bracket mounts. So ended up blasting and powder coating both sides. So satisfying :wtf ...

Re: Let's talk Coolant Options...
I'm not a fan of chemical flushes either. If oil got in the system from bad cooler seals, then I guess you have to use something?

Re: Let's talk Coolant Options...
Tom, IME not sure if dexcool can be viewed as a lapse in judgement. I have been running Prestone Dexcool (gray jug with orange cap) in my 951 for years with no problems. It seems to go in orange but turns a pink color shortly after. When I replaced my water pump awhile back, it looked flawless ...
