When I lived in Miami, I rented a house with a standard 2-car garage. My BMW 3 series at the time kept smelling like mildew, and I was changing the cabin filters like crazy. I eventually got a couple portable dehumidifiers for the garage and was stunned at how much water they pulled out. Easily a gallon an hour, sometimes 2. I ended up putting some in the house too, which really helped the a/c cool the place. Positive air pressure inside the garage can help with pollen too, but you'd need some kind of hvac for that...murphsea wrote: Wed Feb 01, 2023 12:11 pmThanks for the feedback.blueline wrote: Wed Feb 01, 2023 12:07 pm
I'm in TN and, while I have no flood risk whatsoever, it can still get humid at times during the year, although not nearly to the extent you're dealing with in Charleston. Anyway, I air-conditioned the whole space (Samsung Quantum mini-split HVAC) that does a fantastic job year-round.
Mine is a fairly large and deep 3-1/2 car garage, plus a storm/safe room. However, it is very well insulated and sealed. I mostly have custom-built wood cabinets (nothing fancy - just clean and functional) with a mix of other storage I've accumulated over time. Temp & humidity control is important to me so I also have a dehumidifier as a backup and assist if needed for any extreme humidity summer days & nights.
Some people around here put plexiglass on the inside of the louver panels to keep out at least some of the dust and pollen (don't get me started on the pollen here). It may help and I might be able to put in a dehumidifier once I have that done.

Yeah, the pine pollen here is very bad too. You can see clouds of it being blown around.Bill in Bama wrote: Wed Feb 01, 2023 12:18 pm
Pollen? I can give you pollen. In spring everything growing in Alabama seems to put out pollen but the most potent is the pine pollen that coats everything in yellow/green powder. Even in my garage. With the door closed.
My black GT3 is going to be a challenge during those times.
Thinking of getting one of the CR Spotless water filtration systems so I can easily just spray the cars down without having to go through a whole wash routine. They're ceramic coated so it should work well I would think.
When I moved to Charleston people used to talk about getting their houses washed and I was thinking they were crazy.
Never did that in Chicago and certainly not in Ireland when I lived there.
Everything is green after pollen season. It's incredible.

Well, I've been meaning to post some garage pics, not very impressive by the standards of many of you guys, but I'm a messy guy in the first place and my garage only looks pristine (My pristine standards) about twice a year and these pics weren't on one of those days. I installed Gladiator cabinets almost 15 years ago since Lowe's carried them and they fit my budget. I assembled them all and hung them, and when I built my new two car detached garage/pool house in 2019 I put two Gladiator cabinets in it for pool and garden supplies. They are nowhere near Baldhead standards, but they are fairly nice looking and functional for me. I installed the MaxJax around 2012-13 I think, use it all the time for all three vehicles. My compressor is an old ex-service station unit I appropriated from my business, changed the motor to 110v as I don't have 220 in this garage, it knocks badly upon startup but has been doing that for over 20 years. I pumps to 175 psi so can handle the air wrench and anything else I need. Cabinets shown open are one for oil and one for cleaning/waxing supplies. Be kind with your comments.

@Bill in Bama
Kind comments on the way from a cold, icy, dreary Mid TN day...
Your garage looks great! It's the workshop of someone who does everything himself, has the many tools for the different jobs (cars and otherwise), has a lot of stuff that's useful and necessary, has it all easily accessible and knows where everything is! What works is what you go with.
We all know that Tom does tons of stuff but he keeps everything in the "Tom Way" so what we see is just a very clean space. In fact, he does so many different things, I think he's hiding a purpose-built maintenance facility somewhere close by that he's not showing us!
When I get around to posting pics, you'll see yet another approach - a lot of things are out in the open but are kept organized. It's my way.
These kinds of postings and pics are what makes Carpokes unique - we get to see what others do and it's ALL good! Bill, your garage is fantastic!

Thanks, Tim, getting cold here too, winter is never in Dixie just yet. I seem to be constantly straightening up and throwing out, but the inflow of boxes is constant and I can't get the recycling center often enough. I'm also a pack rat if you've nit already figured that out! But yes, I usually know where everything is( there is the occasional surprise) and if I reorganize too much I'll never find what I need. I've considered putting down some fancy flooring tiles like Racetrack, but the thought of clearing everything from the garage makes my back hurt and fitting them in with the MaxJax is a puzzle I don't want. But come spring I may get things sorted better.

Ha! I dare not post pics of my attic. Or my basement. Or my second basement. Or my second attic. Well, you get the idea.

Ah-ha!!! I knew it and I love it! Tom's true workspace exposed! (Parts of it anyway. I don't possess a high enough need-to-know clearance to see the rest. Not yet.)Tom wrote: Wed Feb 01, 2023 2:19 pmWow, the force runs strong with this one.blueline wrote: Wed Feb 01, 2023 1:09 pm ....I think he's hiding a purpose-built maintenance facility somewhere close by that he's not showing us!![]()

I knew there was more behind the flux capacitor in the presentation garage than met the eye. This newly revealed, previously hidden space even has a Santa staring straight at us as though out of a Twilight Zone episode. That and all the rest silently waiting behind the veritable non-de script grey door!
The camouflaged, de facto workshop lair of the Mad Genius exists!!
