Since joining Carpokes about 6 months ago I added a 2002 996 targa to my garage.
I bought a $35 short shifter from Amazon and changed it over. Here is the video of install and test drive.

That is very close to the same shifter I purchased from ECS tuning, branded "Racing Dynamics".(RD)
(ECS # 4315201 9961968020 RDY)
It was $ 175.00 in early 2021. I had seen that less expensive unit on Amazon, leery to buy it thinking it was a cheap POS.
The RD unit came with great instructions, step by step illustrated. The install was simple.
I see you had trouble removing the cable hub stop clips. They wedge out of the stop and into place using a thin blade screwdriver to remove, & needle nose pliers to put them back. Easy, once you take a long look at how they are designed.
The tilt on the shifter is for both RHD & LHD. I put mine in as delivered, also by mistake, & didn't notice any improvement over the OE. I drove it for about 3 months without a console just to make sure I was satisfied. ended up keeping it in the car. I did change the direction after a while. Once reversed or tilted more to the right so reverse is almost at a 90 degree angle, it feels much more comfortable.
...BTW-The Porsche alingment tool does not work on this flat blade shift stalk to keep it in absolute neutral to adjust the cable stops. The stalk is wide & flat. The OE is a round shaft that fits the tool. (# 000-721-961-91 Shift Cable stop bridge)
In my opinion, the $35.00 one is very close to the Racing Dynamics unit as far as looks. I am thinking that a new OE shifter would have been a better choice, as "short shift" is not real on these aftermarket units. The shifter does not feel any better, or worse than the stock one, abet the slop is gone.
