Saturday my engine quit on my '21 718 GTS 4.0, 3100 miles, owned 6 months. I was coming home from town when it went bang and all the warning lights came on. Low oil pressure message and that was it. I had it transported to my dealer 50 miles away and this afternoon my salesman texted me that I would be getting a new engine and a loaner. I'm going to call the service advisor tomorrow to try to find out what happened.

Ug.... So sorry. I'm sure they will make it better than new, but still... Given Porsche's official numbers, I find it curious how many people I've come across in person and on this board who have had these failures. See this thread:

Ugghhh is Right! Sounds like they are making sure the right thing is done here.. so that's good! unfortunate you have to go through it an I'm SURE the loaner won't be as fun in the meantime.... Keep us posted. Hopefully its a smooth process!
Cheers,

I just got off the phone with the dealer sales manager(service advisor wasn't available), and he told me they suspect the oil pump failed. The Porsche service rep it at the dealership today(perfect timing!) and he was driving a Spyder that had the same thing happen. He also told me they will replace the entire engine and not attempt to rebuild mine. Additionally, he said Porsche has a supply of the 4. 0 engines that don't show up on a dealer search for parts, kept semi-secret for just such occasions. He said the Spyder failure was fixed in about two weeks. He also told me he is relating to Porsche that I'm pretty irate about the situation (which I'm not), and that I deserve some additional compensation. What that will be (if anything), is up in the air right now, but the 8 year extended warranty they offered to those with the con rod issue would be nice. I don't expect the $1000 voucher they got as well, but who knows? At least I may be able to drive my car before the end of October. We'll see, but it looks like it could have been much worse.

Here's a pic of my oil pan, notice the flecks of metal from who knows what. New engine is on order. [img]

Did they say why they thought it was the oil pump and not the con rod issue? Cool that they let you see the oil pan like that. I assumed Porsche would want those motors sealed up and shielded from mortal eyes until back in Germany for forensics... Not that it helps, but based on the bang you reported, I would have expected even worse in there.

The oil pump is just a guess so far, but based on past experiences I think. They won't know for sure until the engine is opened up, which I assume will be done in Germany.

My sa updated me yesterday and said mine should deliver around the end of October (assuming no missing parts, which lately seems to be the norm). That said, I’m a little concerned about something like bill’s situation happening. It’s just odd we go from con rods to oil pumps a few months later.

I talked with my salesman yesterday about the engine, he said the techs there at the dealership will tear it down to a certain point and take pics and document any damage they find, then it will be shipped back to the mother country for full examination. My new engine is already on the way and he said once it is delivered he will call me so I can go up and look at it. I'm curious as to how much of a "new engine" I'll be getting, long block, short block, something else? I can't imagine it will be totally complete, but we'll see.
