I am starting to plan a trip for later this year and would like to take the Amtrak Auto Train from Sanford Florida to Lorton Virginia. Might be a good way to combine a nice train ride and then the long way home with the Boxster. Does anyone here have first hand experience with the Auto Train with a Boxster or 911?

Grazie

I didn't even know that kind of thing existed! I think it could be a very cool and a relaxing venture, at least as long as your car is loaded and secured properly and safely. Also, are the on-train amenities such as seating, food, drink, cleanliness, etc. supposed to be good, as in European train good? That would be key for me if considering such an excursion.

Just before the apocalypse, I took the train from Seattle to Chicago. Two nights. I had a room with toilet and shower. Meals were part of the fare. Everything was kind of primitive but very relaxing. I enjoyed it.

A lifetime ago, we flew to Chicago and took the train from there to Winter Park, CO for a ski trip. We literally got dropped off on the side of the tracks at Winter Park! It was a bit of a rustic two-day train ride without many amenities but it was fine (not unpleasant at all) and was an experience that I'm glad we undertook.

We flew home. (It was part of the original itenerary, not as an afterthought to avoid a train ride back top Chicago. ;) )

Don't have first hand experience, but a bunch of PCA Chesapeake folks did that when Parade was down in Boca. Folks said if you do it pay for the early off option, it's well worth it. But there were no issues with 944, Boxster/Caymans or 911's (stock cars, none GT).
