Wheel Hop = Comfort Tire Pressure?
Hi all. I'm currently running 34F/38R psi on P Zeros on my 992 C2S and have experienced rear wheel hop when accelerating from a standstill. I recently had car serviced and the shop inflated the tires to 40F/46R which is too harsh of a ride for me. So wondering if the wheel hop is associated with the lower tire pressures for comfort load and if anyone else has experienced this. I will try to inflate back to standard load, and see if the hop goes away. Never experienced this on my 991.2 C4S with Cup 2's; not a big Pirelli fan anyway.
I have a 992 4 GTS and I been putting 33psi fronts and 36psi rears. I've not experience anything like wheel hop.

Since I don't like Pirelli tires either, I'd blame them whether justified or not.MH992NC wrote: Sun Aug 27, 2023 6:02 pm Hi all. Seriously though, what you are experiencing is nothing I've had happen yet, so if the higher inflation numbers don't work for you, then it would tend to cast dispersion further towards the Pirelli's.
Have you gotten your tires good and hot (using your lower starting cold pressures) and tried the acceleration from standstill to see if any hop?
FWIW, as Eric indicated, I don't think the low pressures alone are causing your rear wheel hop. On the other hand, maybe it's the combination of specific Pirelli tire characteristics and the lower pressures?

On the '21, I do have the tire temp gauge, so I do make sure the tires are good and warmed up. Although I don't accelerate very hard from standstill often, the few times I have recently, it's been noticeable. Someone else mentioned bushings in the axels??. Or it could it be the traction control? The thing is, I've experienced TC doing its thing many times, but this wheel hop is more violent than any TC measure kicking in.

I'll ask around to see if any similar experiences from others - now I'm curious.MH992NC wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 9:05 am On the '21, I do have the tire temp gauge, so I do make sure the tires are good and warmed up. Meanwhile, please let us know how it all turns out, whether it's pressures, bad tires or some mechanical malady. Good luck with the sorting!

@MH992NC is your car 2WD or AWD? If 2WD, my 2009 BMW M3 does have some wheel hop when taking off hard, been a two WD, I think that it is a characteristic of the 2WD vs Torque. Depending on the suspension set up also. But I'm not too sure, since my M3 only does every once in a while, not all of the time.

Curious as to why you would have MPSC2's on a 991.2 C4S - they're not the standard issue tires for that car. Were you tracking it?MH992NC wrote: Sun Aug 27, 2023 6:02 pm Hi all. When I bought the 991.2 CPO from dealer, the Michelins were already installed. I did not track it nor the 992. From my experience with Pirellis on other cars, I’ve always switched to Michelins when the time to replace came. I don’t like how they perform, balance and ride. Cup 2’s are are overkill for what I want out of the performance on the 992, but you can’t deny the ride quality.

Understood - thanks for the clarification. The Cup 2's are definitely soft but of course on the flip side that means faster wear.
While at the dealership today I asked and my Gold tech go-to friend said that wheel hop was not something that's been an issue he's aware of. He did suggest trying the higher pressures to see if any difference, so I'd be curious if the higher non-comfort pressures help any.
However, whether the pressures help or not, I'm inclined to lay the blame on Pirelli. The P Zero Max Performance Summer Porsche "N0" were OEM on our Cayenne Turbo at delivery and I couldn't wait to get them off and get Michelins installed in their place. Didn't have to wait long as the front Pirellis were done before 10k easy driving miles by my wife. The Michelins ride and handle much better. Better wear too.

10k, easy driving on fronts? Wow!! Hard to be a repeat Pirelli customer with that kind of performance.
I did accelerate several times with traction control off (long press) along with increasing the pressure +2psi and could not make the tires hop. Could've been a combo of traction control and lower pressure causing the result.
I appreciate the feedback you guys are giving. Very helpful. I think I'll try a little harder to wear these Pirellis out so I can enjoy Michelins before colder weather gets here.
I've also noticed that some 992's (at least 2020's & 2021's were coming from factory with GoodYears.
