I have a '23 GT4 with the "Preparation for Porsche Dashcam" option, XWN.
It would seem there's 12 volts available at the rear view mirror mount, meant for the dash cam. Has anyone installed a radar detector there and used the 12 volts for the dash cam to power the detector? This setup would seem to eliminate chasing wire across the windshield moulding, down the A pillar to the fuse panel. Maybe it cuts power to the connection when ignition is off and it's fused? (I have no plans to install a camera)

If yes, is there a link to info, a video, parts list, etc? Best mount to use?

Thanks,

Mark

Hey Mark,

There have been a few discussions here about using the "Prep for Dashcam" for other devices. Here's one thread I found that touches on that:

There are more scattered about on Carpokes I think, but that one should give you some ideas. Also, maybe others here will see your post and can get you some answers.

Meanwhile, welcome to Carpokes!

Looks interesting but the manufacturer's web site is lacking in that they do not show a Porsche Model C installation photo in a 991.1.

Also, what sensors do they use in the front and rear cameras?

I use this camera on my tundra. Just periodically check the files, it has corrupted the micro sd card in the past and needed to be formatted to continue operating properly.

Yeah I agree. Probably a good practice with any dashcam....but I format the card within the FITCAMX, using the FITCAMX software, every two months or so.

So has anyone actually located the outlet, the apparent plug they paid $130 for, called Preparation for Dashcam" that should be a 12V female outlet somewhere around the inside rearview mirror, under a snap out panel, etc? No forum anywhere seems to have actually stated how to do this, and dealers either don't know or won't say..... All I see is somewhat elaborate patched together handmade wire harnesses and no specifics as to where to get the 12V other than down at the fuse box, passenger footwell, passing it up the A pillar. The power should be up near the mirror, for the dash cam.
Thanks,
Mark

A belated thanks and a bit of a Necro-post here, but I now have FitCamX cameras on two P-cars - the '22 Turbo S and the '24 Cayenne S. I love the cameras!

No interference issues whatsoever (I think the chatter regarding Macan issues was due to something else going on), the FitCamX cameras look completely OEM, the resolution is excellent (I run them at the highest setting - 4k which is 3840 x 2160), the operation simple, no cloud or Bluetooth to deal with, and more. The cameras are doing exactly what I wanted them for - protection and back up (insurance, law enforcement, exposing fraudulent acts, etc.) in the event of an unexpected occurrence.

The video quality is excellent. (If anyone reading this decides to get one, be sure to add the polarizing filter.) I ordered mine directly from FitCamX.

I’m glad to hear it’s been working out great for you. The mostly invisible placement (no additional attachment to the windshield / reduction in viewable area) along with a relatively straightforward (for DIY) install is what keeps me going back to FitcamX for my vehicles.

It may not be the best choice for those looking to get telemetry or overlays for recording track events or for content creation but it is plenty for someone looking to ensure they have footage of what is happening during their drive.
