I own a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 and it’s my first Porsche. Over the last 50 years, I’ve owned may German cars including BMW’s, Audi’s and one Mercedes. The Porsche price point was always higher than I was comfortable with and the dealerships seemed a bit intimidating,

Several years ago, my good friend bought a 911 SC and a 987 Cayman. I became obsessed with owning a normally aspirated Porsche sports car but didn’t have the temperament nor mechanical acumen for an older model. A new GT3 was out of my price range and didn’t seem like a good choice as a daily driver and the GT4 seemed more track focused than I needed.

I found my dream car in the Cayman GTS 4.0. It has an old school NA engine, I could use it as a DD and a weekend canyon warrior, and it had ample storage for my needs.

I’ve owned the GTS for three years and couldn’t be happier. The car has been trouble free and puts a smile on my face every time I look at it and drive it. I’ve also found Porsche owners to be super nice and inclusive.

Well…..that’s my story as a first time Porsche owner. Please post yours!

I first fell in love with Porsche riding in my father's Wingman's 356 at a German Hillclimb in the 60s. After the race was over the Event Organizer simply charged folks one Mark ( about 25 cents ) to drive up the same course. Fighter pilots don't understand slow, and to a young boy of 11 it seemed we were doing 100 mph, and though much slower, the excitement level was supersonic. Watching sports car races in the 60s I fell in love with the 904 and though other Porsche cars caught my interest that was the machine I always loved the best. After spending two different stints selling automobiles ( much of it with high performance machines ) over nearly 30 years, I never purchased a Porsche until my wife suggested we have our son Ryan ( Salesman at Porsche of Omaha ) look for a Macan for her. We traded in her Jeep Cherokee in January 24 for a 2020 White Macan S, so, yes, my first Porsche was actually my wife's, ha! Years before while piloting my Viper GTS around a local track, a member of the Great Plains Region of PCA asked me if I would be interested in being an Instructor. I said sure, and one of my first students had a new 2006 Porsche Cayman and to my discerning eye I saw a shape so reminiscent of my lovely old 904 - I was immediately smitten! Over the years, Instructing, I never failed to ask to assist students with Caymans. I loved the playfulness of the driving experience and the toss able nature of the little Crocodilian beast.
Not long after we acquired the Macan S my son mentioned they might have an extra GTS allocation if I wanted to sell or trade in my Mach 1 and though I was excited the LWBS ( Porsche speak for a CF GT4 styled seat ) was not available. That was an absolute requirement and shockingly months later when the GTS allocation was secured the Carbon Fiber bucket popped up as an option. That settled it, my little Chalk Croc was ordered and though the seats seemed to be on and off again for so many, she came through only 5 months after ordered , one of the first 100 built for the 2024 model year.
With some DE and other events under my belt, the burble of the 4.0 singing her song puts me back on the roads of the Eiffel Mountains , a happy 11 year old knowing he is the fastest driver in the World up that wicked Hillclimb in those German Mountains! Of course he is now piloting a 904 with A/C and Hoosiers, but the childish dreams may have taken a while to come true , but patience has proven to be a virtue!

I had never really thought about Porsche ownership ,have had a long period of driving a string of BMW M cars.

I was at the Nürburgring with a new M6 that I had picked up at the factory and had a number of laps with a friend who was also an instructor .

He murmured that the M6 was hugely powerful (507 BHP V10 was no slouch) but more of a street car. “You have to try a GT3 “ he said.

And so I did- A track- prepared 996 GT3.

The car blew me away.

On my way back to Canada I was sitting in Frankfurt airport and noticed a Porsche magazine with a picture of an orange car on the cover. It was the first look at the 997 GT3RS.

Boy,I wanted that car. Returning to Canada I visited the local dealer and mentioned I wanted to ponder one. There was a silence and she quietly told me they were all sold. “No problem” I said-“ I’ll just get one one next year”

“Umm-they are all spoken for”.

I went into the dealer every couple of weeks for the next year. I wanted nothing but the 997 RS.

I think they got tired of my face. One day I got a call from Antje, the salesperson I was dealing with.

“I have just had a cancellation on a green RS but it will be gone in minutes-but if you want it you need to move now.”

I bought it on a hour - November 2007 and I still have it. I have bought three more RS,two Cayenne V8s and a Panamera ST Turbo from Antje since then and every RS has been tracked at the Nürburgring.

I guess my instructor was right !

I posted a thread of my progression through various marques but always, I mean always, dreamed of a Porsche. Heck I don't think there was one even in my hometown growing up but the library was filled with the usual magazines. It's funny how an image, mine was a 911 plastered to the front of my brown paper bag covered school book, haunted me for years. Father gave me a book while I was finishing high school for extra motivation.

It was a long but worthwhile wait when one presented itself to me at the perfect time (was selling my e46 M3).

Wow! Love the story, the saved "For Better or Worse" comic panel, the car and, most impressively, the 1993 note from your Dad. That's awesome beyond words. (And his advice was so spot on and correct too.)

Thanks for sharing that - it's what Carpokes is all about in my mind!

I was a blue collar worker (retired now) and inherited a few dollars. Having already paid off my house and having no car payments, I simply put the money in the stock market and basically forgot about it.
One day my broker called me and told me to go out and spend some money. ( My parents left it to me to spend, not to just sit on.)
I decided to buy myself a brand new Mercedes. Due to the fact that I looked like I might be able to afford a down payment on a used Chevy, the salesman started showing me the lowest price cars. and I had to tell him to kick the price up. He showed me some of the higher priced ones, but they just looked too ordinary, so I couldn't talk myself into one.
I thanked the salesman and walked back to my car. As I got in my car, I looked across the street and saw the Porsche dealer. I could buy a Porsche. I walked in and told the lady there I wanted to buy a 911. I thought she could show me three or four and I could choose one.
No, I had to order one and wait for an allocation. Then they had a chip shortage. Then we got the Covid epidemic. Then a ship full of new cars caught fire and sunk, so they had to replace those first, but after 18 months my car finally arrived at the dealer and I've been smiling ever since.

Great story and the E46 M3 also got my attention - IMO, the pinnacle of BMW engineering.

I never thought I would ever get a Porsche because I was never a big fan of them growing up. (I can feel you all rolling your eyes lol). I grew up around cars and racing. Shifter kart racing since I was 9, F1600 series, etc. Porsche was always around, in the magazines, Top Gear, at races, etc... But I never paid much attention to them. I was always lured by the dramatic Italian cars and monstrously loud and brutal German (M and AMG) cars.

Long story short, a couple years ago after I bought a couple of my dream cars, I had this strange urge to try out a Porsche all of a sudden... That was 2 years back, and there was literally no allocations.

So I decided to buy a new 2023 Macan GTS they had on the lot... I thought why not, let's give Porsche a try lol.

The day I took delivery, it broke (not kidding). I drove it off the lot, and the little sound generator was malfunctioning/shorting out every time I hit the gas. I had to drive it right back, and wait 1 month until the part came in from German... Not a great start lol.

After I got the Macan GTS home, I started to like it.... Not love it, but it was ok. Fast, sure... Loud, yup... Beautifully built, absolutely. After driving it for a while, I decided it was just not for me. But I can see why the Macan GTS is so popular.

But, there was just something luring me to the 718. I had no use for one, as I already had a couple new sports cars and track cars... But there just something about it. I started obsessing about it, spending WAYYY to much time on the Porsche Configurator.

The dealership said they had a allocation for a 2024 718 Cayman Style Edition... I took it. Why not, let's try this again.

I have owned it for about a year now. There is something intangible about this car I just cannot explain. It's not the fastest car I own or the loudest car I own... But it has opened a whole new appreciation for these cars and cars in general. I now understand the "Porsche Effect"

I have never had so much fun configuring a car, making little aftermarket leather parts from the likes of @CrazyEddie, collaborating with @Larry C on new upgrades, and working with @Tom on custom 3d printed parts.

I still don't know what it is about Porsche that has made me fall madly in love with this car, and perhaps in a way I hope I never find out. I just know, this little 718 has made me re-fall in with cars all over again.
