I was just wondering if you could chip in, so I can keep my anxiety levels up
So in one year of ownership, I've had a couple of minor issues and a potential bigger one that I just discovered last week. I've done 12k miles with at least a half of that on the track and a third in the mountains. I don't baby the car at all.
Here is my list:
- 2x cracked front windshield: once on track, once on a mountain pass
- 1x cracked passenger side windshield, mountain pass
- 1x Oil sensor bugged out, reported low oil and instructed to put in 1L. I've put in 0.5L and it complained I overfilled
- Front right suspension leaking oil.
- Varous creaks and noises developed (mostly door panels)
- Developed loud pop (not ackermann) sound when turning over speed bumps. Most likely steering rack or maybe suspension related.
And that's it, it actually doesn't seem bad at all
Decently aggressive track driving is guaranteed to eventually bring out a few issues not unlike those you are having.
My GT4 was purchased expressly for track use and has been set up for same - it sees as much time there as I can muster. I've done a good bit of aftermarket upgrades regarding track use and have also undertaken additional precautionary preventative maintenance way beyond what is recommended. Nevertheless, there have been repairs for failed parts and leaks too. I see it all as part and parcel of being on track or barreling through curvy roads. Not babying the car will do that. However, that kind of hard, aggressive driving is what they were built for in my opinion.
Your windshield issues are certainly unfortunate but it does happen. Creaks are also irritating but usually solvable, so maybe the door panel sorting you were thinking about will help in that regard.
Sensor failure, well none so far for me. I'm guessing that your experience with the failed oil level device was maybe just a one off rarity. Hopefully that's the case!
Your dealer's service people should be able to determine and correct the pop you are experiencing. It will help if the pop can be easily recreated at will. Suspension related is certainly a possibility as well as any type of component flexing occurring elsewhere. (I had a persistent pop in the front of a '19 Cayenne Turbo that was quite sporadic and therefore difficult to track down. However, after many months we finally got it sorted which was immensely satisfying.) Is your pop coming from the front or the rear?
I've done a bit of aftermarket suspension work and, while no front suspension issues such as the leak you are experiencing, I have had to deal with various similar issues at the rear over the past four track seasons. Heat to suspension areas in the rear is currently my biggest challenge. I'm dealing with misshapen outboard CV joint boots, no longer as pliable as the inner ones. I have crispy sway bar link boots too. Additionally the seam sealer and coatings on the body in the vicinity of the Soul OAPs are quite roasted, and the jet-hot coating on the pipes is flaking off of the tubes in a few areas. Heat back there is intense and I'm looking to rectify that somehow if at all possible.
My point in posting this about my GT4 is that you are not alone in what you are experiencing. Sustained hard driving will always incur issues of one sort or another. For me, the alternative is not driving the car or doing so gingerly. Ain't happening!

New Porsche windshields are wimpy. All anecdotal, but I've seen way too many broken windshields on new Porsches. This used to be a pretty rare occurrence but now seems to be the norm. A friend cracked his driving home from the dealer the day he bought his car!
Re the oil sender, that's the engines way of complaining about the lack of dip stick.
There was quiet recall on a door panel/speaker piece. My dealer changed 'something' in there and quieted the rattle my car (turbo) came with. Other than that, the firmer the suspension, the more likely you'll get rattles. My solution is Krytox and an open sunroof.
Hard to know what the loud pop is, but this video came to mind...

The pop in video is similar to what I'm hearing but mine is coming from the front and it's not fixed, it feels like it's coming from various positions somewhere behind and below the dashboard. It's odd.
I did check my swaybar, got new links, and tightened the subframe bolts.
Hard to tell from the short YouTube clip but it doesn't sound like anything metal, hence maybe not suspension or steering. A loose or ill fitting piece of trim or something under the cover panel in the front trunk that's hitting the front firewall - maybe something around the master cylinder area? I've had that in the 718 GTS.

There have been a couple of known issues in the cowl area on both the 991 annd 992 --under the plastic cover where the battery is. I chased a similar sound on my 991 that was just something loose under that plastic cover. I'd be inclined to take a peek under the plastic cover and/or see if the noise gets louder without the cover installed. Not sure about the GT3 specifically, but some 992 gas tanks apparently knock against something and make a suspiciously similar noise...

Turns out the pop sound in the video was due to faulty/broken suspension component. Haven't taken it apart yet to check what blew.
Glad you found the source. Please let us know exactly what component and what it took/how it was fixed once you get it resolved. That would be most helpful to many of us!
