Don't get me wrong, when it works, it works well. And I enjoy having power steering. But the system on the 944 seems like such an afterthought. Countless turnbuckles broken, welded, rewelded; countless v belts; pump refurb, new mounting kit and now this! The mounting point on the engine block is just gone! I think I'm going to go manual just to avoid the break-downs.
Does anyone have a reliable source for the factory (not converted power) steering rack?
So tired of the power steering system

Hi Tom,
I know you asked for factory, but you might check out this video by NC944er.
He pretty much uses VW parts that bolt into place.
Cheers
Edit:
It's a kit mainly comprised of VW parts that's made by this gentleman.

That looks very tempting. One of the first things I had to do (on this 951) was replace the steering rack which leaked horribly. Three years later and after the warranty has run out, it has started to weep on the passenger side. Having one less fluid to leak sounds great. Replacing the rack one last time sounds even better. Not a fun project I want to do every few years.
that power to run that pump has to come from somewhere. Either directly from the engine via belt or go from the engine to the alternator to the pump. Personally, I've never had a problem with the pump, just the rack and/or hoses.cp99 wrote: Thu Jan 30, 2025 11:54 am What about using an electric pump, which gets rid of the belt-driven pump? Retain hydraulic power steering while reducing a load on the motor.
