Hello fellow carpokers,
Our 944 handbrake lever is not latching and therefore is not holding - where should I start the investigation?

Do you mean the button on the handle stays pressed in? I recall freeing mine with generous application of spray lube into the gap around the button and then spastically mashing the button until it behaved.
If you mean applying the hand brake doesn't successfully hold the car, that's probably the fussy adjustment at the rear wheel. I need to do mine and I don't want to because it's a pain. I think the service manual says pulling the hand brake handle three or four clicks ought to fully engage the hand brake. Mine right now is more like "pull it all the way and it barely holds".
Could also be something wrong with the hand brake cable itself, like corrosion inside the sheath it travels through.
