I recently purchased a 2015 Cayman S and I can barely see the tach during the day. At night it looks great. I can see the tach a little bit better during the day if I turn on the headlights and turn the dash lights to 100% as shown on the righthand display.
Anyone else have this problem? i have a hard time understanding why Porsche would make the tach so hard to see in daylight, back in the day it wasn't like that.
I have a tach with a black background, I see pictures of 981's with white (and yellow?)
background and that must be a lot better. I have a PDK or I would really be bummed.

Common Complaint in the 982s as well. I have white dials in my build partly for this reason. Some have coded the dash lights so they are always on (with mixed success).

OEM Dials in other colours:

These gauges are very expensive, even by Porsche standards. Also, I don’t think you can get one that says “GTS” or “GT4.”

Wow. Those are way overpriced. There's a guy in Europe who does custom dials for $150. Did the ones on my old Bimmer.(they looked perfect) I'll see if I can find his contact..

The 981 instrument cluster uses LED lights mounted to a PCB. I have a 981 S and have the same problem, the backlights are not on unless the headlights are on and even then, they are too dim. What was Porsche thinking, never mind that the gauge is white numerals against a light grey background ! So, I have a clone PIWIS computer interface and will look to see if the programming of the display computer can be changed to be always on. Regardless, because of the dimness of the lights when on, I bought a used instrument cluster to replace it. If it's not possible to have them on when the headlights aren't on, I'm going to retrofit some more leds next to the existing ones (spacing is tight) - I'll be using tiny LED's from a company that makes them for model trains and such.

There are a number of gauge face suppliers that are a lot cheaper than Suncoast: gaugefaces.com has them from $150 to $420, e-bay $60 from China, (AliExpress even cheaper but I've been burned buying from them). I got mine from venoxy.com in Poland for about $150 plus shipping and they are great.

In a book I am reading about the 981s. It says that the base models have the white tachometer face while the S models came with the gray face unless it was ordered with an optional color.
