And George's 2nd birthday is coming up. https://www.snopes.com/articles/352023/ ... n-in-2022/

Nothing wrong with cranking up the Victrola and reveling in the sounds of the old 78s; but they weren't the endpoint of real music, and the second era of car sounds is just dawning. Imagine the future, where all car sounds are actively managed and configurable.

Cars will make whatever noises they are programmed for. Maybe a mandated, standardized tone to advise pedestrians. Boring! Maybe downloadable sound packages, so a Civic can sound like a Shelby, or a bi-plane, or a sea lion! Or noise-cancelling 'stealth' mode, eliminating even tire noise. Maybe - since everyone will have always-on Bluetooth ear implants in their heads, each person will be able to configure their spatial awareness, either accepting the broadcast sounds or substituting their own. So, when any Porsche drives by, to you it sounds like an air-cooled 911. And a Rolls Royce sounds like a wristwatch.

I think our ICE 718s will be cherished for as long as they exist. Flat 6 folks must realize that a flat 4 turbo is the sound of Porsche for many of us recent arrivals. And the new stuff will continue to broaden the driving experience and then take it in new directions.

Like up. For George.

Victrola's got all the press, but they were made all the way out in New Jersey, and were very difficult to transport around the country (by train mostly). So instead, lots of companies made similar talking machines in various parts of the country. My great grandparents bought our Bluebird in our about 1909, made in Los Angeles and sold in San Francisco. For a wind-up machine with no electronics, it produces remarkably good and loud music. The cabinet is still stuffed full of shellac records my family played back in the day. Maybe once I get my neural implant, I'll make it play the sound of an air-cooled 911. :)

But I digress....

When I bought my 997.2RS it was going to be the last manual Porsche - end of the line for stick shift. That was in 2010...............

Reviving this older thread with some new speculation I read today in Motor1 regarding the 718 EV replacement. Today's Stuttgart Market Letter posted the link.

"Is Porsche Delaying The Electric 718 and Three-Row SUV?"

"German media reports that the EV sports car might not arrive until 2027. The SUV could come even later."

There's a "photo credit" in the article for this image which is some kind of artist's rendition - no idea how accurate it is nor who released it or where it originated. Probably Motor1 seeing as how their logo is plastered all over the image. :D

The local Austin exotic car dealership group recently allowed customers to drive "their" cars solo around the Circuit of the Americas for 5 laps behind an instructor.

This dealer has Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Porsche, Lotus, and Audi.

I got there and saw three different brands offered for driving: Porsche, Audi and Lotus.

Lotus was the I4 Emira.
Audi was either S7 or RS7 (cannot remember)
Porsche was Taycan and EV Macan

Tells you all there is to know about Porsche EV sales. I drove the Emira I4 and found it superior to my Cayman GTS.

I have a 99 996 C4 and a 02 Boxster S . I was thinking I might put the Boxster up for sale . But the wail of a flat 6 at 7k is intoxicating . So now I am going to refurb her 144k suspension .

I personally think Porsche is making a mistake with the Boxster/Cayman decision for ending the ICE . But it's not my decision to make . But I only see the value of ICE Boxsters/Caymans going up .

With the current market changes affecting Porsche I am confident we will see the ICE machines continue for a longer period than initially noted , especially in parts of the World where EV is not a major focus --- i.e. US, Canada, Australia, Africa ,etc.

So many times over the past years Automotive Manufacturers have changed their product plans because of various market conditions , often because of positives, not always negative forces. A good example would be the Dodge Challenger, slated to end in 2014 , but due to consumer demand and product changes it continued for another decade. The Cayman/Boxster/Macan could easily see dual models at Dealerships in the US, since the EV demand is too light to establish the sales requirements they projected. Just my humble opinion, but after 30+ years in the business the changes that often occur are so prevalent that it is more a case of how fast a manufacturer can adjust than will they actually adjust to market demands.
