Merry Chrysler and a Happy Lexus December to Remember sales event to all, good luck with the clam chowder.

I want to put a 908/917 style balsa shift knob in my car, although nobody actually makes them properly with balsa wood sadly, and I am looking for ideas. I don't want any of the generic wood knobs, like Momo or this other place I saw GoClassic makes, those are hideous. A shift pattern etched into it is the most I would do.

911outlaw made a kit which was 450 euros, and I looked today it's now 700 euros. WTF justifies a massive price hike on that? It barely justified the 450 euro price tag with the shift boot they have in the pictures, so how does that justify 700?

So does anyone else I'm unaware of make one? Hell even taking the style of the 911outlaw which seems like it was just a machined shaft to cover the stock shifter with a thread on top for the knob might be the way to do it.

Just do what I do in these cases. If I like something but I think it's too expensive, or I feel I don't like to pay for other people's work, I just spend the time and material and make it myself.

Here is the one I made for a 87 944. You just need a piece on aluminum bar, some wood, and a leather booth, that's all. Assembly may required.

You forgot the first step of reading and implementing this book... jk jk. I hear you, but no longer have access to machine tools. Back when I worked in a shop, I made a very nice Delrin shifter for my truck.

Not sure where you live but there might be “Maker” studios or shops you could join that gives access to machine shop equipment and 3D printing machines and other stuff as well. Another source could be local community college or trades school to see about machining options.

I'm interested to know how you did the center shaft, cause that's the tricky bit. The knob itself is super easy to make.

I just drilled out the bar stock so it fitted over the shifter bar, and added a set screw from one side. The set screw is below the booth.

Hope this helps.
