I replaced the one on my car a few days ago. I thought I had cleaned up the crankshaft but the new drive would jam after maybe 5mm and was a struggle to get off. The crank needed more work with the emery paper than I expected before the new drive would seat in the oil pump, despite careful cleaning and oiling. The new one was a Porsche article.
Also doing "while you're there" work but had to replace the bearings in the front housings of the balance shafts as well as they showed too much wear.
Oil Pump Gear
I tried sanding it this evening to make sure there are nor burrs. I lined it up and tired to slip it on. It gets this far and gets stuck. It becomes very difficult to get back off. I just can't see it supposed to be this tight.
It's not a keyway issue because I can't even get it to the keyway.
To say this is frustrating is an understatement because I've spent more time on this than the rest of the project so far.
I've searched and searched and searched for any documentation on the updated gear and I can't find anything. The few videos I've found on this shows the new style gear slipping on just like the one that came off the car.
At this point I'm out of ideas. I'm waiting to hear back from 944Online where I bought the gear to see if they are any help. So far it's radio silence but I was also directed to email someone else since Ian's email has an auto responder to contact someone else.

Paging Steve at @944online... I once had a main bearing in a Porsche box that was defective, so it can happen. Seems unlikely they'd machine it in the wrong size though... I'll rummage through my old parts tomorrow and see if I have one I can measure for you...Richey wrote: Tue Jan 13, 2026 8:02 pm I tried sanding it this evening to make sure there are nor burrs. At this point it would make sense to just get a new gear. It's a shame you can't get in touch with the original vendor. Cut your losses and just order from an online Genuine Porsche Parts dealer. Personally I like Delawareporscheparts.
Actually, I think there are two different gears for the early cars. I remember having to check my engine serial number to make sure I ordered the correct gear for my 1984NA. However, I'm not sure if the newer style is backward compatible or if it is a different fit.

I think the issue was emailing Ian, since Steve has really taken over daily operations from what I can tell. I just pinged Steve and he assures me he's taking care of it. He suspects the part was just machined wrong -- sadly Porsche parts quality control may not be what it once was...chrischrischris wrote: Wed Jan 14, 2026 4:49 am At this point it would make sense to just get a new gear. Glad to hear Steve is taking care of this.
sadly I think we are entering a period of diminishing parts quality - even from the dealership.
I bought a front main seal from the dealership - the parts counter guy looked at it and agreed "I wouldn't install that either".
I Ended up getting an elring from rockauto. The new OEM are Victor Reinz. Others have reported them leaking prematurely at the rear main. Mine looked brutal and I wasn't taking the risk.

Back in the day there was endless talk about which rear main seal leaked the least. I bought the one people said was best (I think Elring if I recall correctly) and it leaked. Second one leaked too. Then I bought the factory install tool and used it to install a cheap Victor Reinz RMS and it's been leak-free for 18 years (knock on wood).t36 wrote: Wed Jan 14, 2026 4:21 pm Glad to hear Steve is taking care of this.

This was my poor quality VR front main from the dealer. The outer seal was really inconsistent in its coating. If oil got to the edge, I wouldn’t trust it not to leak through.
