I recently joined Carepokes. My main interest has been Porsche 928s, I own four (well, soon to be three). A few years ago we purchased my wife's 2009 base 957. I enjoy some light off-roading and can attest that the First Gen Cayennes are quite capable. The low-range and differential lock provides ultimate flexibility.
Ours was previously owned and had 195,000 miles when purchased. Normally such high miles would scare me, but I knew the seller and it has a very good service history and the price was right. I knew what I was getting into. My mechanic loves the VR-6 and attests to the reliability.
Since the purchase, it did need the several wear items replaced: transmission valve body, front suspension and all the shock absorbers. Given the age and Arizona heat, all the plastic and hoses under hood have been replaced (thermostat, housings, water pump, etc.).
We're now up over 211,000 miles. A Blackstone oil report came out with excellent results. There is no oil consumption between changes.
The 3.6-liter VR6 provides acceptable power for our needs and the luxury of owning multiple Porsche 928s provides my performance outlet when needed.
There are some parts savings to be found given the VR6s and Cayenne commonality with VW/Audi and other European cars parts bin.
I'd be glad to share my insight if anyone has questions in these areas.
