He has dyno'd dozens of 944's over ther years and he says that while stock turbos usually come in pulling the equivalent of factory spec, 220 or 250 bhp, N/A 944's are usually quite a bit lower than 163 or 150, coming in usually around 130-140. A lot of that is probably due to age and wear, so as the experienced folks wrote above, just making sure the stock bits are working as they should ought to make things more lively.
That makes some sense to me. On one hand the average Turbo is a few years younger but still also not "young" by any measure.

Normally aspirated engines need everything to be working efficiently and to be tuned well in order to make peak power. Airflow in and out needs to be efficient, compression needs to be within tolerances without any leakage, spark and fuel delivery need to be bang on. The engines are all ~40 years old with various levels of neglect or partial maintenance being performed over the years. It is 100% feasible for things to be "off" by 10%+ throughout the system and dropping 10-15hp from optimal power.

All that to say, I agree with trying to return the engines to original factory specs as best we can first before seeking "more". Plus if you don't address the inefficiency potentially in the engine from deferred maintenance, a shiny new exhaust and intake won't really do a whole hell of a lot and/or it will just expose the other elements requiring attention and down the rabbit hole someone goes......
Know a little about a lot and a lot about a little.......

Of course, while I think those experienced folks above are absolutely right when it comes to reliability and economy, I did choose to go down a very deep rabbit hole...and I am building a new motor after less than a year, but while that "breathed on" N/A motor was running, there was a huge difference with what I had before!

The death of my "hotted up" engine was not necessarily related to the "modernized" parts, like the MAP, hot cam, wasted spark ignition or Augment programmable ECU. I was running rebuilt OEM injectors, and one of them decided to get stuck, flood a cylinder and wash away all of the oil... I think I'll be trying out more modern EV6 4 nozzle injectors on this next build.

When I dynoed my NA after converting to Tom's Augtronic (MAP, better injectors, wasted spark) my new hp figure was 167hp, 220nm on E85. Unfortunately I didn't dyno my car before the changes, but it definitely feels peppier than before.

Hello, I decided to install this M44/07 engine from a Porsche 924S (150hp) in my 944 because it's well-maintained.
The 1987 924S belonged to a friend/neighbor who bought it brand new. It was serviced at Porsche Alicante and had all its maintenance done at a Porsche dealership with original parts. It has 70,000 genuine kilometers.

The car was in an accident, and I kept the engine because a cylinder liner in my 944 was damaged by rust from tap water.
Thank you.

I imagine many of you know this story, but when Porsche came out with the 924S in 1986 for Europe, they had a problem because with the 163hp 944 motor, the 924S was actually faster than the base 944 of the time, having a lighter, slightly more aerodynamic body. So Porsche decided to use the lower compression US/Japan market dished pistons to bump down the power a bit. In 1988, since the 2.7 had replaced the 2.5 for the 944, Porsche put the higher compression pistons in the 924S.
I see that 944year83 is in Spain, so all of our cars of this period in Europe came without catalytic converters or much other emission stuff. Just an annoying charcoal cannister for the fuel tank...

I dont know from memory, but you can find all measurements/tolerances in the FSM.

You can download them here:

Im not sure if a spanish version exists, but if you search around on google, maybe you can find one.

As an alternative, you could copy and paste text from the FSM PDF into chatGPT and it will translate for you

Best of luck in your research
