Thanks Tom,
My tech is 6ft 7" thus the salami finger description. THat is why he is reluctant to go further with cluster removal. He does good work tho I might not have authorized ordering a Sachs clutch from Germany. I am confident I can get cluster out with much effort especially after watching a few Utubes .
PS: he did not remove steering wheel and I am sure if he did he could get the cluster out.

Tom is correct, I have sausage fingers and I'm a brute, and I have removed my cluster many times without breaking anything... The most brittle pieces are the multi-pin connectors, their latch mechanisms are old plastic. I found 1 broken already, but haven't broken any more in my monkeying around.

Thanks to all for tips and encouragement. It took me just a few minutes to get cluster out. Two of the clips that hold cable in place were already broken and it was a little challenging moving the retainer out but it was done.
In defence of my tech it was tight in there and I could see that a man the size of a NFL lineman would find this challenging. And he did not want to break any of the ears. WHile I was working on the 968 at his shop UPS arrived with a box that was sagging on the edges. It turned out to be my Sachs clutch pack from Germany. Felt like Christmas!
Thanks for the support.

Now that the cluster is out I can take this opportunity to increase the cluster brightness. I went to www:only944 but they have nothing. Anyone know of a replacement kit specifically for my 968?

I also went to your advertizer and they do have a bulb kit for 944 but not 968. R they not interchangeable?

As best I know, the 968 cluster is essentially the same as the 944. I say essentially because there are dozens of variations on the basic part. Congrats on getting it out. Want to test the ones that don't work?

Nice of you to offer but my tech is good at electrical troubleshooting and I am bad at it. Let s let him have a shot.
Is there a place where I can see all your advertizers are listed. Looking for upholstery work. I have some Recarros that need some help. I bought some seats out of a 993 that are one third the weight but my attempt to remove the black paint/dye that someone applied over the tan is not coming off evenly, so the tan underneath is really uneven. 2 OZ of leather dye is $16 oz and my bet is it will take 10oz to do one seat. Ergo the interest in fixing the Recarros.

I was able to get cluster out easily after removing steering wheel.
I think my guy is more of a mechanic than tech.
Tom, you suggest something like grounding a wire while engine running. Would you be able to post a pic for this first step?

From your first post, I understand you have 3 gauges that weren't working: fuel, temp, and oil pressure. Is that right?

Do you have a multimeter you are comfortable using? How comfortable are you with electronics in general?

Let me know, and I'll come up with tests for you....

The cluster is back in despite what I told the shop. So I get to do R&R the cluster again. In my too many years of tinkering that I care to admit plugging in and out I think cleaned some contacts so the speedo works. Only problem is oil pressure and temp guage which of course are the most important guages. The gas gauge is also hinky.
ANyone think that hitting all the contacts with a small wire brush I might get lucky?
Hollywood Speedo and PA Speedo want $450 to $1000 to check and rebuild cluster which I am reluctant to put out at this stage. I've got seats, clutch master cylinder, and paint on roof and right front fender to deal with.
Lastly the car did not come with a handbook so does anyone know how to reset the ODO? For years are family did our road trips in a VW without a fuel gauge. Dad just kept track of mileage. We always got the most base of cars. VW with no radio or ODO just 36 rippin' HP. Chevy Biscayne was not much better.
