My plans and notes for Burmester:

- Quality sources (Lossless FLAC Files on SD Cards, and Apple Lossless Audio via USB not a CarPlay dongle as wireless CarPlay is not lossless)

- Start with the Pure Setting as I Learn the system.

Some captures I saved as I researched are attached.

Good Luck, will update in a few months

Adding for future researchers:

@P_Coastal

Nice! Thanks for doing that research and for posting it.

For audio, I'm definitely a fan of "Pure" (or by whatever name it goes by depending on the system) whether in a car or at home.

Awesome info thank you! Is that legit, you can only use an SD card up to 128g? Odd...

Gotta discourage cards to promote satellite...

Seriously, many digital device manufacturers (of all kinds) are shortchanging customers with restrictions on SD card storage capability. I don't know if they're cheap, lazy, behind the times or just incompetent.

Edit : some have said it is due to a desire to further push cloud storage by limiting their devices' SD storage capabilty. I guess that is similar to my satellite radio crack. However, if true, can add another term (that I'll leave unnamed) to my reasons above.

I think it is just that our PCM was designed ~2015.
256 GB may work, but I don’t know that for sure.
@sbac0n I encourage you to download the GTK App and explore the specs as they exist.

That's true - older software and hardware platforms. Do you think the system you outlined is the same as the Burmester being used in 992's or are they a newer design? (I would hope newer but I have no idea.)

No, the 992 uses the PCM 6, the 981/718/991 used the PCM 4 system. Very different systems. The PCM 6 is based on the Audi MMI system.

Talk about old school and not making connections, a week or so ago I commented with others here on how bad the 718 was regarding Connect, referring to the outdated, clunky Vodafone partnership w/Porsche. Well, that is also PCM and tonight that simple fact didn't even click with me regarding the audio talk. Even after many years with various PCM-type controllers and displays centralizing and directing pretty much all user-related functions , my brain failed to connect the Burmester (or any relatively current audio system) as being an integrated part of PCM (which I did know was ver 6 in the 992).

I slipped into ancient darkness thinking of car audio as being the stand alone head and amp units of yore connected to speakers, rather than part of the interconnected software that it is now. Good grief - I gotta get with the program.

Thanks again for the clarification and removing some of the cobwebs in my head!

Update: car is here and without question the Burmester is amazing. At 40% power it booms. Top down + freeway + just the right song, shooting up the onramp or cruising just because... amazing! 50% is almost too much! Wahoo!

For anyone that is on the fence about the Burmester, get it, hurry! To me, it has as much usable power as a more expensive after market audio install I had on a 2018 BGTS 2.5 and now, in the 2023 BGTS 4.0 I have something that actually has MORE bass and I can still control the sound settings within the PCM. And, I don't have things cut in/installed that are foreign to the car and still have total peace of mind that the car is OEM!

I love this car! Ha, but I knew I would. I did not know I'd love the Burmester this much. I had high expectations and they were all met. I know there are better speaker materials out there with heavier magnets and such but this system, together, works like a charm. The sub is powerful and coupled with apple music via the cable Apple CarPlay for lossless audio, it's a dream.

Want to just drive and listen to the engine, go ahead.
Want to cruise along and listen to some tunes, be my guest.
Want to drive fast and listen loud... yes please!

Great feedback and good advice for those on the fence about the upgrading. On a nice and well-equipped car like yours, I would think that Burmester is almost a requirement if you're going to listen to music. It's is a plus for resale too. Why stress over aftermarket if you can get the sound you want from OEM. I passed on the upgrade on a mostly track-day car but didn't hold back on the luxe GT cruiser.

Enjoy your top-down (or up) cruising!
