A 1966 Olds 442 4-speed with tri-power (the only year that option was available - they were rare). Bought new when I was 16 but I had to make the payments. I worked several jobs - whatever it took. A lot of car for a kid. I didn't get rid of it in the sense that it was sold. Let's just say after burning off the third or forth set of rear tires in its first 18-months it ended up in car heaven. Early drifting. I guess I'm lucky that I made it out in one piece.

The other would be my amazing 1972 Datsun 240-Z that I bought upon my return from RVN. Conned a Virginia banker near where I was stationed into making the loan. He apparently either thought well of me or felt pity. I drove the snot out of that car - drove it until it basically rusted in half from ten or more Southeastern Michigan heavy salt winters and roughly 175k miles. What an amazing drive-train and awesome overall design - it was an incredibly good driving car. The early Z's (70 to 72) were just about as good as any car can get in my opinion. (Well, outside of the rust, but pretty much everything rusted out completely in Michigan back in the day.) I loved that car!

There are several others cars over the years that were pretty fine but that I don't necessarily regret moving on from.
I’ve seen some crazy restorations of those Datsuns. People swear by them.

I miss these from my earlier life (late 1980’s)….
1970 Nova SS 350
1969 Chevelle SS 396 L78

And really i wish I could have bought my dads former 1966 Nova SS L79. He sold it in 1982 (I was 15).

Some great Chevy's.

I had a friend in TN way back then who had a new light yellow '66 Nova SS with the 327. It was fine but, unfortunately, had a sad ending.

Later, I so badly wanted a particular SS 396 after I had moved to MI. I'll always remember that blue '69 on a dealer's showroom floor that I longed for even though at the time it was light years out of financial reach.

I tend to be a serial collector, so I don't really miss anything that left to make way for the next. The closest might be my second Miata, an 2001 LE that was a great little car. And maybe my first Boxster, an 2006 S that introduced me into this cult.

Like many on here I wish I still had my first car, a yellow 1969 Datsun 2000 roadster. It was only 1 year old when I bought it at age 18, and since I spent ( on and off ) over 30 years in the car business there were many other machines I regret not having. There is really only one other car I seriously regret ever selling and that was my rare 2008 Venom Red Viper ACR. It was the only one in Venom Red built with the " Hardcore " option ( no radio, no speakers, less sound deadening, no rear carpeting ,etc.) Only dropped around 45 lbs., but like Porsche, it represented getting rid of weight for serious track addicts.

It's funny about first cars. Mine was a '65 Mustang convertible, 289 with a slush box. In January 1971 it was just an old car that was end of life. A real POS. What I could afford at the time.

My first car was in 1968 and was a 1956 English Ford . It was one of the few cars where I made money...I bought it for about $4 and sold it a year later for $20. So, I can say I had a car that went up in value by 500% in a single year. Take that, Ferrari 250 GTO:) !!...........

My wife and I still miss our second Scirocco (1981 S). Our first new car, kept it for 10 years. Sold it only because we needed a more useful back seat as our son grew. Replaced it with a new '91 Jetta GLI 16v which our son still owns and drives today.

Here's an early shot of the Scirocco, before it was upgraded with 14" GTI rims.

I still regret selling my 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe with 302 Chevy and Muncie 4-speed, and my 1965 Chevy Malibu SS 2dr-hardtop with 400 hp 327 Chevy and Muncie 4-speed. I've had other cars I fondly remember such as a 1929 Model A Roadster with 389 Pontiac, a 1957 Chevy Bel Air 2dr-hardtop, a 1964 Pontiac GTO, and a 1934 Plymouth Coupe street rod, but I still miss the '40 and '65.

I now have a 2016 Cayman GT4, a 2002 Corvette Z06, and a 1969 Porsche 911T track car.

Rod
