No, there isn't anything inherent in the geometry that would cause faster synchro wear, but the ability to shift more accurately and quickly might encourage faster shifting, which in turn could lead to accelerated wear if precise rev-matching and clutch action are not used. I especially caution my air-cooled Porsche 911 customers with cars that use Porsche synchromesh that installation of a modern shifter could lead to this scenario.

Yes, but the Only944 shift lever alone takes care of all the side to side slop problem (see animation in the first link below) while maintaining the original shift geometry. I have the shift lever only on my 944S2 Cabrio (which is appropriate for its cruiser status), and both the the shift lever and the short shifter assembly (mounted on the transaxle) on my 951 track car.

Both setups are fantastic for their intended purpose.

Just don't have the stones to try to install the shift linkage arm with the trans in the car.

I got inspired to do this job in the last few days. It does take some patience with the trans in the car, but it's not all that bad. Getting the 11mm ball joint tight is the most challenging part.

That being said, I think I lined everything up right, but can't get 2nd gear engaged after doing shifter + link + short shifter. Tom will attest this is not a totally new issue - getting into 2nd gear was never "easy" before this upgrade. When I try to shift into 2nd, it feels like its in there, but will just grind if I let the clutch out.
I fiddled with the shifter back and forth adjustment in the front, but no change. Next I'll triple check that the set screws are in the right places and then fiddle with the left right adjustment on the transmission. Unless of course, someone else has a better idea.

Never mind. One of the set screws was NOT lined up with the shaft hole. Re aligned and all is good!

Reminder to always triple check!
