Will fixing that let my fuel nozzle shut off at the correct amount, or will it just give a better drain point for gasoline rather than spilling on my paint?

The gas nozzle does not shut off before it spills, even if everything is in working condition. You have to listen closely for the gurgle that occurs just before overflow. This was true in my 944, even when new.

I had the issue where I would smell gas as well from the rear. It didn't actually spill over under the car until I finally filled up the tank full when going through the mountains in GA/NC.. at a stop in the top of the mountain there was a steady trickle of gas.
I think it was from the fuel filler hose bottom rubber sleeve ( there are two ) being totally absent. I replaced it but really haven't put it through all the tests. I did have the tank out previously and at the time didn't know it was missing.. But I did see the leak in the area where the fuel filler hose met the tank (where NC944er mentions) ... and the old top sleeve was pretty useless per the picture.

It does sound similar in that it didn't smell very bad until I filled the tank more full than 3/4...

I have an early car with the metal tank known for cracking. I too, had a fuel smell with a full tank and chased everything from removing the tank and pressure testing and looking for cracks to checking and replacing all the vent lines in the rear as well as fuel sender gaskets and fuel filler hose. The smell still remained. Although the smell never seemed to come from the engine bay, and my fuel hoses were not leaking, when I actually wiped down the hoses good enough to see the 1982 stamping on the hose I knew they had never been changed. I replaced the hoses and the fuel smell went away. Do yourself a favor, if you don’t know if the houses have ever been changed, replace them not only for the fuel smell, but to prevent your car from burning down.

Interestingly, and quite timely, I just had this letter through in the mail, today. I will add that this is a UK recall, as others I know have also received the same letter. I’m not aware of whether it is applicable in other countries, but it might be worth checking with your local OPC service department.
