To somewhat make up for not taking any disassembly photos here are the assembly photos.

Here I am pressing the new bearing back in the hub. It is intuitive when you are doing it but you want to select the appropriate sized discs to press the outside of the bearing into the hub, only putting pressure on the outside race of the bearing. I have part of the tool clamped in my bench vice and am drawing the bearing down with a breaker bar, not an electric impact as I want to feel how smoothly the bearing is going in. I did use a little bit of grease to make it go easier, green grease as you can see it a bit in the pictures.

Now fully seated. Notice I had temporarily installed the wheel speed sensor, see that little black finger poking in the hole. More on that later.

Now to press on the flange. In this case it is important to hold back only on the inside of the bearing.

I disassembled the bearings looking for evidence of why it failed and I did not see much. The races all looked good suggesting no water intrusion and corrosion. All that I saw was the grease was dark, hard and dry. It was crumbly, no longer greasing. Here I am showing that the cages have started to go away.

Finally I wanted to share that I had never installed this type of bearing before and one question I had was which way do they go in. Physically they go in either way but one side had a brown dust shield and the other a red. After a bit of testing I found that the brown side was magnetic, ah ha! That means the brown side is going to the inside and that is for the wheel speed sensor. Golden!

I found the OEM bearings online were $100 a piece. The OEM bearings from the local dealer were $150 but they were not in stock and the aftermarket bearings were $50 a piece from a reputable brand, in stock locally.
Since these were OEM and did not last long is it worth paying more for OEM again? Not sure but I decided to go with the German bearing company Schaeffler/FAG but I have been using these bearings for years on my other cars and they are always regarded as top quality. I could not find any marking on my OEM bearings so not sure who Porsche is using.

Spontaneous road trip up and back from San Diego to Monterey on the California coast since they finally re-opened Highway 1!

That is a pretty long drive, did you do it all at once or did you stop overnight somewhere to relax and maybe enjoy some of the wines in the area. Heh, just trying to live the dream since it has been very cold in the Midwest this year - yes I am envious, ha!

The specific section between San Simeon and Monterey is by far my favorite of the entire coast, but much of it is spectacularly beautiful and super fun to drive.

Historically I have had an annual conference in San Francisco that I would attend and drive up and back as a sort of pilgrimage. For me, that has had as much ore more value than the event itself! In those trips I usually would do San Diego to San Luis Obispo on the first day and then up from there to San Francisco on HW1 the second day. And a similar return trip.

What I did last week was leave San Diego on Tuesday morning and take an experimental route up to LA/Ventura and then 33 to 166 to 101 and spent the night in San Simeon.

Wednesday morning I was up at dawn and drove up and back a few times with meals and stops mixed in. The morning drives were particularly great with very little other traffic on the road. Later into the day there were certainly more cars but the weather was great and I very much enjoyed the car, the road, the experience.

I ended up back in San Luis Obispo for Wednesday night and drove back to San Diego following the reverse of the route up and really enjoyed 33 in particular.

I drove down Hwy 1 from Carmel to Big Sur 20 years back and had it on my bucket list to do a full drive from Cambria up to Carmel. That was accomplished a few years back right after Rt. 1 was repaired, yet not long after another landslide closed it again. Now that Hwy 1 is clear I am glad you could make the drive and I will admit the SloCal area is probably our favorite part of California. My wife and I enjoy staying in the little town of Cambria and have overnighted in San Luis Obispo a couple of times, with other stays in Santa Barbara and Carmel. I am sure we will go back again, in the future, but I am mainly envious that you are doing those beautiful drives in your Cayman - we had one rental that would barely keep up with the 80mph California traffic. I watched too many CHP TV shows as I figured I was going to get nailed , but on two occasions they blew by us at probably 100 mph.

Last weekend I was at the track on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday I got a check engine light come on while on track, and after reading the codes it was for P2C4200 Engine Compartment Purge Fan 2 - Mechanical Fault.

I vaguely remembered this as a possibly being some crud stuck in the fan blade causing the fan to not be able to turn. To investigate with the engine warm I went to all 4 corners and verified 3 of the 4 fans were in fact running. The rear passenger side was not running, the one that draws in cool air the engine bay at the top of the side scoop.

I did not let this stop me from enjoying the rest of my day on track or stop me from driving back home.

The next day at home I put it up on jack stands and removed the under tray. I could see the fan and when I move it with my fingers I found it stuck. I could force it to move a bit then it gets to a stuck spot again. I used a flat blade screwdriver to pry it from its rubber mounts and what do you know, there is a tire turd stuck between the blade and fan shroud. I simply removed the debris and reinstalled the fan. Cleared the code, let the engine warm up and verified the fan now runs again.

On an unrelated note, I never noticed the cars in your signature. What a great German car selection from old to new. We need a place here for all the great Porsche cousins hiding in people garages. Would love to see the bug.

There is a screen of sorts in the side scoops already however debris can still get by. The same companies that make front grill screens also make screens for the scoops, I have not tried any. I feel this is a not unheard of thing but not common so I am not quickly wanting to find a solution. I believe this same thing happened to Tim @blueline one time.

Any time we put screens in front of airflow we have the risk impeding flow so I try to limit that practice unless it is required.
