The gears are designed to work together to produce the right calibration. A gear with too many or two few teeth might bind and/or will produce inaccurate measurements. Your replacement odometer gear needs to have the same number of teeth as the original, unless you change the whole gear set.

Mine has already been replaced with a metal one, however it seems the second gear in line is missing a tooth, and that's causing it to bind up every so often. Don't suppose anyone has modelled that one? If not, next time I have the cluster apart, I'll give it a go.
