Turns out the check valve seat hadn't been fully pressed in from the factory so it was partially blocking the oil passages and not allowing the ball to move enough.
So did you test with the spare valve?

No we installed the valve seat at the correct depth, oil is flowing to the head now. Found a oil leak at the turbo oil feed so the manifold is off again to rectify that

We have boost! We did some breakin runs today on spring pressure but the tunes not particularly great yet. It feels great to drive, it doesn't feel laggy though the log below doesnt show a particularly fast spool up, we're getting thrown into the seats even at 9psi.

Really happy to see this. Gets me more excited for my own build. Congratulations, and I can't wait to see the numbers after you dial in the tune more.

We did the first oil change and a filter biopsy, does anyone have any ideas what this brown crud is? Its hard but brittle and has got us scratching our heads a bit. Pretty clean apart from that, just a bit of a shimmer in the oil that was in the filter.

Havent done too much driving apart from the initial break in, there seems to be a bit of a rattle from the variocam unit when the oil is at full temperature so we need to investigate that.

Never mind, I worked it out, it's tensioner pad chunks, lots like I'm pulling the head apart tomorrow

Sorry to hear that and hope you don't find any other issues.

The head scratching continues, pads look good, check valve is in place and the J-tube isnt cracked. We put in a new oil pickup and oil pressure looks good, drops a little bit under 2bar at idle when its warm but jumps straight up to 4.5. Maybe Im just being paranoid, a lot of money and time has gone into this engine

Were going to pull a couple of cam caps to make sure there was no damage when we had the oil pressue issues to the head on the first start.

Well, the filter did it's job so that parts good. What was the origin of the block and other internally lubricated parts? Any chance you are just washing out someone else's debris? When Jason Lee prepped a 104mm block for me, he removed all the freeze plugs to clean the passages and insisted sludge would be left behind otherwise... Just a thought if nothing else becomes obvious...
