At school in 1968 I came first in a terms spelling test series and was awarded a “book of automobiles” .

Front cover was a red 1968 Mercedes 280SL - that was my childhood dream car 🥰

It is important to realize that in my childhood I could walk into the local Ford dealer and admire a brand new 1950 Ford.

I still have the same poster I had up on my bedroom wall in high school (though the poster is in the garage). The car was brand new at the time. I may still end up with one, but after driving modern Porsches, I'm sure they're most about nostalgia and curb appeal at this point. :shh:

My first/second car was a red '65 SC cab, bought at the same time as a '58 beetle as a winter car. The Porsche was a $600 insurance recovery with the engine missing, the beetle was $40 and had been parked for eight of its nine years of life. The SC was a car I'd sort of longed for, but a local 289 AC Cobra was the first car I actually lusted after. The Porsche drove for a couple years with a VW engine, but eventually got a 912 engine (same as the car came with originally) after it came with me from NJ to SoCal in the late 1960's for school.
