It would be interesting to have a paint correction forum that could provide tips and comments on how to solve various paint issues from swirls to chips, to door dings, and then outright scratches. I recently used a new series of products from www.3dproducts.com and the results are amazing on my 2016 Boxster.

I am looking to do this very same thing with my '86 Guards Red Targa. I have about 2 dozen rock chips in the hood and scores and scores of rock chips in the front lip as well.

These would have to be filled and address prior to the ceramic coating. Im also considering PPF on the bonnet and side mirrors.

Thoughts?

I think it depends on your goals.
Are you wanting it all original paint? If so, then i'd get those chips fixed by a paint correction guy before the process begins. That's what I did.
If not, then i'd consider a repaint.

It may just be me, but PPF seems odd on a car this old. LOL
I considered it, but wasn't sure how it would look on a 36 year old car that isn't perfect to start.

I agree on the ppf. I have a, '86 guards red 944 Turbo. A while back I had the front clip painted from the windshield forward. I was having my then-new 991 wrapped in PPF at the time, so opted to wrap the front of the 944 to protect the new paint. It looks great (better than the rest of the car), but almost too good/smooth for the car's vintage. Probably doesn't help that they had to use base/clear due to environment regs, even though the rest of the car is a single stage paint.

If you drive the car a lot, and hate rock chips (like I do) the PPF will protect it, but it's a bit different than doing it on a brand new car like my 992. I think the PPF texture/sheen actually matches the new base/clear paints better.
