Good morning Carpokes,
My name is Chris Summers.
I’m retired and living in Santa Fe, NM.
I went down the Porsche Rabbit hole in the 1980’s after rocketing off the Coronado bridge onto I5 in a 1972 Carrera. I’ve owned a 1988 3.2 Carrera, a 2010 997.2 Turbo cab. Currently we’ve got a 2019 991.2 TurboS and a 2022 Cayenne Turbo. I just ordered a 2025 718 GTS 4.0.
Looking forward to learning from guys….looks like a great forum.
Welcome aboard Chis! Great resume of Porsches, past and present! I spent a night in Santa Fe many years ago and remember thinking it seemed like a great place to retire. It was summer, and I'm not sure if it was the norm or a fluke, but the bright pink sunsets were so memorable and special!

Good morning Blueline,
I’m supposed to ask if you know a retired navy guy with a gentian blue spyder?
An old friend from AA
Chris
I know him quite well, although I avoid letting others know that!
However, to stay on his good side I will say that his 718 Spyder is a bona fide beauty!
Navy & AA - he has buddies from all over from those glory days. Yes, he's a good one and a good pal - they broke the mold. He visits Carpokes on occasion to check up on me and make sure I'm not getting out of line.
I'll echo Tom's sentiments regarding Santa Fe - it was during childhood when I was last there (that would be centuries ago ...) but it was a special place. We spent several weeks in the Red River Valley area near Taos, rustic camping out mostly off of some old abandoned dirt road next to the Red River (a big stream, as I recall). Dad dragged a rather large downed tree across the road so no one would find us. We had the place to ourselves! (Better times back then - could get away with those kinds of shenanigans, although I think we finally did get outed.)
Anyway, a second welcome to Carpokes Chris. Looking forward to photos of your rides should you decide to post any - they all are marvelous I'm sure. Me and the old Navy guy had Cayenne Turbos but thought we'd give the new gen Cayenne versions a whirl. It was a team buy . (We pester the heck out of the dealership.)
Tom's handy-dandy pic posting guide in case you get the urge and seek a quick how-to guide. Easy to post on Carpokes! viewtopic.php?t=410

I also recently launched a navigation app for Porsche enthusiasts recently called Pacenote (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pacenote- ... 6739889662) because I love the Porsche driving app idea and just wanted to make a higher quality version of it.
Feedback on any of the projects or the new daily driver is welcome!
Very cool Rahul. Your nav app looks interesting - need to add Android capability if you can.
Additional color sites to compliment Rennbow and Porsche's site (https://media.porsche.com/paint-to-samp ... acinggreen) are always helpful. As I've mentioned many times, color renditions are always tricky. Porsche's configurator is infamously inaccurate, but their newly added 360° view within the configurator is pretty awesome and a welcome change.
Welcome to Carpokes!
PS - I vote for the 718 - what a wonderfully fun car to drive!

As a Porsche DE Instructor who is viewing your choices and has actually driven both quite often ( from Instructing and from 30+ years in the Automotive business ). I compete in Time Trials and previously owned a Mach 1 with the full performance package and some mods and I would hang with one friend in his M2 CS trading back and forth and consistently beat another M2 buddy. I have run the Cayman GTS twice, with only wins, and though the two cars are close on paper I would have to give a small edge to the GTS. Caveat, all of us have done minor mods to the suspensions ( i.e. camber plates ) and run sticky rubber. I think both are great machines, but the feeling of lightness and surprising to some, the better ride of the Porsche, I decided the Stuttgart Speedster was the way to go. I had wanted a M3 for years yet jumped into a Boss 302 years back and was beating the BMWs with similar mods right out of the box. That made for a run of Mustangs for over 10years as they are viewed by many as not as capable - love a sleeper. A NASA Regional Championship in one helped change some folks minds, especially Vette drivers, ha! I do respect the Bavarian beasts quite a bit, yet jumping in and out of different 4 tired conveyances I absolutely loved an opportunity in a Cayman. Racing Spec Miatas for over 10 years I felt like the Cayman was like the little buzzbomb on a mega dose of steroids and its similar tossability and playfulness kept nagging at my soul. With a chance for a move from the Mach 1, the M2 was out of my system, every time I drove one it felt good , yet burdensome , fighting its bulk. Coming from a Mustang, which is quite a bit heavier than both, the BMW felt surprisingly similar to the Stang. If you want playfulness, better ride and way more thumbs up from drivers and pedestrians, you need to decide you want to join the K Men , heck they even make a cereal to explain the excitement of the car --- " Special K , " ha! Ok, bad puns aside, I have never regretted getting the Cayman and it is easily one of the top 10 cars I have owned. With over 100 cars purchased in my ancient life, including 8 Vipers, that is saying alot!!
My name is Kris and I just found this forum, lots of great information!
We just purchased a new 2025 718 Cayman.
It replaces my first Porsche which was a 2010 Cayman S 987.2 that ended up with 220K miles! We purchased it in 2013 when it had 40K miles, and I've driven it a whole lot. Many years of autocross here in San Diego and track days at Chuckwalla, Willow Springs, Buttonwillow and Laguna Seca.
I loved that car and in many ways its a part of me.
Back in May I was able to get an allocation for a custom build GTS 4.0 and configured that car exactly the way I want. It is supposed to deliver sometime between September-December, but my dealership has been very direct and transparent with me and I'm not sure how things are going to go down with the global economic situation, US tariffs, and international shipping drama.
Last week I had the opportunity to drive two base model 718 Cayman examples that had the core options and configuration I care about (black/manual) and was pleasantly surprised by how they drove and the overall performance. So we ended up hedging our bet by purchasing one now with the plan of using it for the next few months and seeing how things go with the GTS 4.0.
The best case is its delivered in a reasonable time and at a price we can still afford. Then we trade in or find a private party buyer for this base model 718 and trade up!
The worst case is its delayed indefinitely, or carries a bump in the price that we cant make. In that case I still have this car which has been a joy to drive so far and is generally satisfactory overall.

220k miles on your 2010 Cayman - very impressive, even more so considering that you spent quality time on track with the car too!
I think you made a smart move hedging your bet on the ordered 4.0 GTS. You get to have fun in an incredible and superb car now without the lengthy wait. You can then move into the GTS if all works out. (Who knows, you may decide the one you have now is the one you prefer. That would not be unusual.) In either case, it's a win-win. Maybe even a triple win, considering this is the swan song for ICE Caymans. Best to have one in the hand as they say!

@blueline Yes 220K on the 987.2 Cayman S was remarkable. It still looked great and was a joy to drive. But in the last year mechanical issues and reliability concerns did start to creep in. There were a number of minor issues that demonstrated anything in the engine compartment that was not metal had been heat cycled and aged to the point of being so fragile and brittle that things would break if you looked at them wrong. I expected that the next non trivial mechanical issue would not be practical to repair. Another big factor in the decision to bite the bullet and buy the 718 now was that the dealer was willing to give us $15k on the trade in.
That was in the upper range of what I hoped to try and get for it in a private party sale - if I was able to find the right buyer. The ease of handing it over at the dealership was such a relief. We paid $45k for it when we bought it as a 3 year old car with 40k miles 12 years ago. So getting a full third of that back in the trade in now was a huge motivator.
Fingers crossed things work out for the GTS 4.0. A big part of me wants the extra performance and appeal of the last 6 cylinder Cayman. If I end up having to make that hard choice, what a privilege!!!
But as you say, who knows... The base 718 is much better than I expected and if we are looking at $7-10 gallons of gasoline (at least in California), then the 2L motor may be very attractive to keep.
