I found this vintage picture, which I believe is from the factory, which would seem to confirm that the brackets go under. Fingers crossed that's the root of your issue!

I'm going to do a full write up on installing this air filter box and I'll make sure to reference and thank carpokes and you all specifically!

I had actually thought about suggesting that earlier, but it felt like a hack to me-- akin to lengthening the slot with a Dremel -- so that's my bad. And here just when I thought I knew everything. ;) I "think" that picture also shows the slots pointing up, assuming the slotted legs are the longer legs. I also found the picture below in the factory manual, which also shows it below. However, to keep everyone on their toes, it seems to show a different mounting hardware (stud encased in rubber, rather than bolt and nut?) and a hole in the vertical part of the bracket. My strongish guess is that the factory changed the mounting set up after the prototypes and/or super-early '85 cars, resulting in inconsistent factory images and illustrations. I never got into Star Trek trivia or the correct way to pronounce 'nerd' in Klingon (venwI), but I'm weirdly drawn to unearthing Porsche history/originality, etc. :shock: :lol: :shifty:

Thanks!! It's crazy to see what minute details they changed over the model years. The pics also show an allen head bolt, while the PET shows a hex head bolt!

Tomorrow, I'll remove the filter box again and put the brackets under the tabs. And then, hopefully I can readjust my cone lock pin and have a nicely closed hood.

Like everyone else I’m sure, I went and checked mine and the brackets are on top. Since the afm housing also seems to rest on the cross pipe, I can’t see how having the brackets underneath would work on my car (1986). The snorkel does make a small imprint on the hood foam, though.

Ok, I just finished getting the filter box out and in again. I put the L profiles with the open slot up, but the tab itself on the underside of the rubber grommet.

So it looks like this: 10 mm hexagon bolt, washer, rubber grommet with metal insert, L profile, washer, 10 mm nut.

After readjusting the cone lock pin to - probably - where it was before I adjusted it the last time, the hood now closes perfectly! :thumbup:

@whalenlg I think it does make a bit of a difference, my AFM was almost hitting the cross pipe, but was still hovering a bit, so this eliminated the 'hover'.

Congrats! What a journey just to get a hood to close! There are times when it feels like the online world has worked out every last detail about these car, but threads like this remind me that there are still endless little details that haven't been covered ad nauseam elsewhere. Very happy you got to the bottom of it (no pun intended) and that your 951 has found an owner willing to treat it like the under-appreciated gem that it is. Should all 951's be so lucky. :)

:) thank you for the kind words! It's indeed quite amazing that stuff like this can still be so difficult to find out. I'm stoked I crossed another issue of the list! Working on this car is really fulfilling.
