While I was doing some maintenance on my friend's 83, he took my 87 S out for a Glamour Shot session. All it needs is some aqua net. I'm very sad that I have to let this one go soon since the Turbo returns from paint tomorrow!

Well....I see that you seem to be missing a 944 from your collection.....
You're only one state away.
No pressure....

You'd have to keep it maintained for me! (Or maybe I can convince Tom to make regular trips fromn Cali to TN to keep the car pristine.NCGermerican wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2024 11:44 amWell....I see that you seem to be missing a 944 from your collection.....

Late to this thread! I have owned an '86 951 since 2007 and have worked on many 944s and 968 as a Porsche technician, but had never thought of myself owning a 944S2 Cabriolet until an opportunity fell into my lap. The original owner of this '90 S2 cab was not driving it much and was, sadly, in deteriorating health, and the car was towed into my shop last year with a smoked clutch. The car was in good shape otherwise with the exception of a broken left side of the main bow of the convertible top (I live in Santa Barbara, CA, so top is down year round!), so an offer was made, a couple of late nights were spent at the shop to replace the clutch, and I had a new cruiser with a minimal outlay of cash.
This has since become my daily driver, and I like it way more than I thought I would. I had always regarded the S2 cab as heavy and jiggly/rubbery in feel, and while that is true, perhaps it is me getting older that has made me appreciate its attributes. It is such a smooth, quiet, and competent cruiser that can still handle a back road quite well. Plus the rad original Blaupunkt Reno 2 cassette player with HiFi sound system with equalizer and 8 speakers is quite fun. My girlfriend also loves the car, and the pictures below are from her solo road trip to Colorado and back last fall, she camped for a small music festival in Buena Vista (I had to stay home to watch our dogs/cats/chickens).
Timing belt will be due soon by time (was replaced at ~80K miles), but I replaced the timing chain tensioner slides and front control arms/caster blocks, steering rack/tie rods since we bought the car. Bought it in February of '23 with 90K miles, now over 104K with numerous long trips and a couple of mini road rallies, looking forward to much more.

My girlfriend once again packed the 944S2 cab to the gills and made her annual pilgrimage to Colorado for the Billy Strings Renewal music festival in Buena Vista, camping in Joshua Tree and atop a mountain in Globe, AZ on the way out (she stayed in a hotel in Santa Fe) before several nights of camping at the festival.
The car was perfect, even during an ill-advised nighttime first-gear dirt road climb to the top of the mountain in AZ (thank goodness for upgraded H4 headlights!), and the top was down during the entire journey.
She then turned around and did a short one-day rally in the San Luis Obispo area the next weekend while I stayed home to watch our animals and get my 951 ready for a rally in far northern CA (will post about that soon in the 951 section).

I'm a bit late to the party. I recently purchased a 1987 944S. I stumbled on this thread and it's pretty cool. I couldn't help but start drooling over the touch screen stereo. Any chance you could share the brand and installation challenges?
NCGermerican any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
