Well I drained the tank (about 2.5 gallons) and pulled the strainer. Strainer looks practically new, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. There is once again debris and gold metal flakes in the gas. I drained the tank with the strainer still in place and it seems hard to believe that stuff would get through the strainer (and I see no sign of anything on the strainer itself), so I'm guessing maybe the gunk is coming from the pump? Hard to believe it would get through the filter either, so maybe pump debris gets trapped between the filter and the tank when the pump fails? Either way, I'm not seeing anything that would explain why the pumps kept failing.

Do you have a check valve on the pump outlet? Maybe debris are back flowing from the filter to the pump when the engine is shut off?

Yes to the check valve -- it came with the pump... It's a good point and makes me think even more this is coming from the pump itself?

I'm incapable of fixing anything without getting side-tracked 'while I'm in there.' This week's edition is stripping and powder coating the fuel pump covers and transmission oil cooler brackets.... My powder coating won't win any awards, but certainly better than the 40-year-old road grime and crusty Cosmoline..

If the pump fails again Bosch now make a replacement for the 044 pump called the 200 :

My 044 still works fine after 10 years but I will for sure try this 200 when/if it fails.

I have a 200, havent done anything more than prime with it yet but Ill let you know how it goes

Mine has 1000 km now, no problems. Some noice from it, but nothing bothering.

Just finished installing a bone stock 951 fuel pump, with new filter, strainer, and all hoses. My plan is to run it with gasoline (e10) rather than e85, which might have been part of the problem. The swap was uneventful. Other than 'restoring' the covers with several hours of sandblasting and powder coating (and new foam), the only interesting thing of note is that the factory fuel pump rubber casing now separates in two, which makes it WAY easier to get the pump inside. Sadly, I discovered this after shoving the pump down through the removable top. But good to know Porsche is still thinking about these thing.... Fingers crossed this one will last as long as it should! With my car detuned, the factory pump seem adequate for my fueling needs. I did some spirited 14psi runs around town and all was well. No where near as fast as the old days, but nicely balanced with impeccable drivability, thanks to mostly stock chips (with only the WOT and over-boost values modified). Onward and upward!

The improved rubber casing design dates back from the 968 I believe. The original 944 casing is probably not available from new anymore.
