Higher engine/coolant temps will yield better fuel economy and lower emissions. Manufacturers are under tremendous pressure to meet fuel economy, emissions, and noise regulations that they must do everything possible to comply. Porsche (and others) are nice enough to give us workarounds to make the car behave more like enthusiasts want, but only when we actively override them. These regs explain why everything is "strict" by default. If you start the car up and just drive, you're going to get auto stop/start, cylinder deactivation, quiet exhaust, higher coolant temps, and economy-driven shift patterns w/ PDK.

Everyone always asks why you can't make the fun modes the defaults when you start the car. Don't ask Porsche. Ask your politicians that question.

The purpose of this message is to request some guidance from those that have successfully altered their 718 parameters with Launch X431 tool.

I purchased the X431 V+ V4.0 tool from Amazon this month. After updating the tool firmware, I attempted to change the auto start/stop to remember last state. In addition, set the gauge illumination to always on.

Following the instructions in this thread; I found correct brush hidden/modified dialog screen under system selection. I changed the settings followed by the write code command.

After power cycling the vehicle, I found the settings reverted to factory default. It would appear any changes made with X431 tool are not persistent.

Perhaps I am missing an important piece of information to make the change persistent.

The X431 firmware version is V24.10. The vehicle is a 2020 Cayman GT4

Odd. I'll have to get mine out and run through the process again to see what—if anything—you are missing. Won't be for a bit, we are loading up the Cayman for a few days on the road starting tomorrow. If I don't post back by early next week, PM me to remind me.

The X431 capable of extracting the engine over speed data similar to the PIWIS tool?

The X431 OBDII tool is advertised as having the same functionality as the Porsche PIWIS diagnostic tool.

The X431 tool lacks some basic functionality. Example, the X431 can not read the DME data for total engine operational hours.

By contrast, the Durametric OBDII tool can extract engine operational hours and much more, unfortunately support stopped at the 981 model year 2015.

@MXK944 - As far as I have been able to determine, X431 is not able to read the current overrev data.

Here's a new one that was reported elsewhere. How to turn off the silly upshift indicator. This is confirmed to work with MT6, tomorrow I will verify that it also works in manual mode with PDK.

New Edit - This change does work on PDK in manual as well, but it is specific to the key fob. See next post.

So to disable the upshift arrow (for either PDK or MT6), the change to make needs to be for the key in use. The control unit has items for up to 4 keys. If you only have 2 keys for the car, they will be keys #1 & #2. There does not appear to be an easy way to determine which key is which. I've found that the key I generally use must be key #2, as making the code change to key #1 did not work, but when I made the change for key #2 it did. So plan on doing it twice:

SYSTEM SELECTION> INSTRUMENT CLUSTER> Board computer configuration key 1--BC configuration byte 4--Eco upshift display = Shutdown
{Default: Open}

And:

SYSTEM SELECTION> INSTRUMENT CLUSTER> Board computer configuration key 2--BC configuration byte 4--Eco upshift display = Shutdown
{Default: Open}

I'm going to go back into this area tomorrow, to see if I can figure out what the several other items that are repeated for keys 1-4 do. There may be some other worthwhile things hidden in there.

I'm really considering a Launch x431 to do stuff like this on my Macan. The price is a big factor holding me back though. I think the cheapest unit I would need, the "x431 pro mini" is around $700. On top of that, don't you have to pay a yearly subscription? Or is that only if you want new updates/features?

The alternative would be a grey market PIWIS tool, which I gather can be had cheaper, and is more feature complete, but also a lot more complicated to use as some of the advanced coding screens are in German. A PIWIS clone can do pretty much anything x431 can do, assuming you can find the proper coding screen, correct?
