Found another rabbit hole! Started on a small enhancement job for the track car and here is where I ended up. See how many mods and what they are….Easter egg hunt!!

How much weight do you expect to remove by grinding the shell down to bare metal?

Spec mini twin clutch with hydraulic throw-out bearing?

OMG Chris, that's amazing!
How many discs, brushes, attachments did you use, and how many cups of coffee were consumed to keep you going?
I hope you were wearing ear protection.....hearing damage is cumulative...ask me how I know.....EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!, can't quite turn it off.

If you look at early pictures of the space shuttle you will see the fuel tanks are painted (white) for later launches the tanks are unpainted "rusty" brown.

The paint on the tanks weighed 10,000 lbs. !!!!!

Not painting the tanks increased payload capacity by an equivalent amount.

It’s a close race between the weight of the undercoating and my sweat, blood and lost skin!
The sound deadening inside the car does weigh a lot, the under coating not so much. I added the wide body and other mods and the rubberized under coating was just in the way and the original paint was a little beat up. Once I clean up the wheel wells it just kept going

Quite a few, but they are cheap! A key tool is the oscillating blade tool, kind of like shearing a sheep. After 40 years of playing with race cars my hearing in the left ear sucks…
The key to success is to do a couple hours at a time and then work on other stuff

The other reasons for this - full cage to be welded in (that would burn off under coating) and I am sealing up a lot of holes in the firewall. HVAC hole, harness hole, various holes and the throttle and cruise cable holes (going to drive by wire). In the end the car should be under 2500

Oh yeah - the roll lock scotch bright discs take paint off fast! And leave a nice paint prep finish. If you ever need a great angle grinder get a Metabo, great tool with a quick release function, change discs in 20 seconds with out any tools

That is also why the big Benz and Auto Union race cars of pre WWII were silver.....no paint saved weight.
