First thing, a big THANKS goes to the CarPokes team and all that contribute to it! Especially to the person who posted the 20-page, picture intensive PDF on the process of pulling an '86 dashboard, which I ended up using last winter and it worked perfectly!

Now for my question: I'm replacing my water pump (& all belts) and I've read that for early '86s (& before, I guess), there's some adaptations needed to use the 'new' water pump. I'm looking at a Geba one and it looks like I need to also get a larger 46mm roller and a guard rail with associated locknuts. There's also a difference in thermostat spacing. Soooo, can anyone confirm the above and/or provide me tips on the replacement job?

Your thanks for the pdf of the dashboard pull goes to the site's founder, Tom. He and many others here know their 944's inside and out. However, I am not one who can help. Someone (or several someones) will chime in soon I imagine.

Meanwhile, I did a quick search in the 944 forum and there are a bunch of topics relating to water pumps there that might help while waiting for a response.

Hi John, thanks for the feedback on the dash removal write-up. Always helps to know when folks are getting value out of our carpokes how-to articles.

As for the water pump and related parts. All of what you said about the upgraded parts are true. However, the upgraded parts have been out for may 35 years now, so there's a very high likelihood your car already has the new parts so hopefully the job is just a straight swap. I'm including below the technical service bulletins about the parts in question, so you can see the official info. For the most part, the updated parts are pretty much all you'll find these days.

How will you tension the belts? If you don't have a tensioning tool, check out our Carpokes 3D printed tensioning tool.

Tom, Thanks for the info. Understanding that the upgraded parts have been out for a while, I'm embarrassed to say that I bought my 951 in '88 (and it's been sitting for a long time, really embarrassed about that!), and while it has about 70K mi., I don't believe the water pump has been replaced. As such, I'm going to assume I've got to get the extra parts. BTW, thanks for the technical info. I already looked at Tech Bulletin #1 but hadn't seen the other info.
As for the tensioning tool, I did download the Carpokes 3D printed tensioning tool file and a friend of my sons is going to make us one. So, another big THANKS for that!
Now for another 'ask', do you or anyone on this have a 3D print file for a flywheel lock? That would be very helpful!

Wow, that's incredible. Please take and post pictures of all the original parts! I could draw up a CAD model of the flywheel lock, no problem, but you would need mighty strong plastic for it to hold up when you torque the front bolt to 155 ft lbs. Maybe one of the carbon fiber nylons would be strong enough, but I'm not even sure about that. On the other hand, if you just want it to keep the motor from moving around as you do the belts, I'm sure a 3D printed part would do fine for that. Let me know if you want me to draw one up.

Next up after that is replacing the clutch which is frozen. I'll likely start another thread asking (dumb) questions on that difficult job!
As for the flywheel lock, the guy printing the tensioning tool is using onyx plastic, a microcarbon fiber filled nylon (or so I'm told), so should be strong enough. Anyway, I'm mainly going to use it to keep the motor from moving around as I change all the belts. If you can draw one up, that would be a huge help!

Will do. I'll model it after my factory version.

Do start a thread on the clutch. Done that job several times on my back.

@jatwood123 just posted an STL of the flywheel lock (link below). I've printed with consumer-grade CF-filled nylon before and don't think it would be strong enough for 155ft lbs of torque on the front bolt. If your guy is printing on a Markforged printer (maker of Onyx I believe), I'd love to hear how it holds up. That printer is known for crazy strong parts, but I'll still believe it when I see it.

Sooo, finally got parts/tools needed and started working on replacing the water pump. First thing was to find TDC and after quite a while and a few videos, managed to find the little window at top of bell housing at rear of engine to see the TDC mark. After that, things moved along quickly --- installed 3-D printed flywheel lock, marked all the places corresponding to TDC, and removed the power steering & alternator belts. That's when things went awry --- when trying to remove the crankshaft gear, pressure was too much for 3-D printed flywheel lock and it broke

(Now, I've got a metal one on order!). I'm checking to see what printer it was printed on and what was the material and will pass that along later. [BTW, Pix are in reverse order]
