Hello everyone,

I am trying to convince Tom to also design those nice license plate mounts (like those: viewtopic.php?t=169&start=160) for the 997s.

Anyone else interested in those by any chance?
Just post a +1 if also interested to get them please.

Cheers,
Chris

I just saw this post - I too, would like them for a 997. But as best I can tell, they are just for the rears, and I would like a better mount for the front. I'm having trouble seeing why one type of stick on mount won't work for any car? And why couldn't a guy use them on the front too? What am I missing???

If the mounting area on all cars were just a flat panel, then yes one design would fit all. But it's not like that. The 992/991/981 has a raised rectangular bead with circles in the corners for the the screws. The bead is maybe 2mm tall. So the mounts for that car needed to have grooves on the mounting surface so that the mounts can stick flat onto the bumper with the holes lined up over where the screws need to go. The raised bead is presumably a sacrificial feature to keep the plate off away from the bumper where it would scratch up the paint. On the 718, there is a raised rectangular platform with spots for the screw holes in the corners. For that bumper, there was no need for grooves, but the holes are in the far corners of the flat mounting surface, so we needed to design the mounts such that most of the contact area was away from the corner, and just that little finger reached into the corner with the thread for the screw. If you put the 992 mount on a 718, a good portion of the mounting tape would hang over the edge of the raised area and never touch the car. I'm sure with enough effort, you could make a single mount that worked for both, but the designs I have now are optimized for their cars, with no compromises to fit other cars, so I'm not inclined to change them.

As for the front, there are two issue. One, there are no flat areas on the front of these cars, so the mounts would need to be contoured to hug the curved panels while still creating a flat plate mounting area. I played around with that for a while, and everything just seem awkward and hacked. The molding tape is not really designed for compound curves like that, and the mounts needed to be too tall to create a flat surface. The other issue is that there's a potential for air to get behind the plate at speed and tear the plate off, and I didn't want to take that risk myself or subject anyone else to it.

If you want to post some pictures of the license plate mounting area of the 997, I'll see if something seems doable and/or if one of the existing designs might work. The great majority of people who get these mounts are putting them on a brand new cars. The exception are people who track their cars and have stripped the holes in their bumper taking the plate off repeatedly to expose the tow hook. That probably explains the lack of interest in this thread. On the other hand, if you get a bunch of people to join up and tell me to get on it, I'm not against designing something. :)

Thanks, Tom. I'll take a closer look to see what is possible and take a photo or two to see if it is something you want to look at further. But the front is the only one I have interest in.

Ok, if it's anything like my 992, I'm not all that optimistic about the front, but more than happy to take a look.

I made a carbon fiber front plate center mount for my 997.2, after not finding a satisfactory solution on the web. I’ll take better pictures tomorrow and detail the sourced components. But I like the result.

Here’s the bracket:

Any of the web available carbon fiber plate frames would probably work…

The resulting mount did not interfere with the center grill guard…
