Does anyone's 4.0 have the pops and bangs on downshifts or when decelerating? The 981's and the 4 cylinder turbo both do this. My 4.0 does not even do this after replacing the over axle pipes. Is this just the characteristic of the 4.0? I know it does have a different exhaust note than the other generations but I did expect the pops.

IIRC, talking to Scott of Softronics, he mentioned that the Pops and Bangs were derived from the ECU, thus it can be brought back if you Tuned your ECU.

I think its all in the tuning. My GLC63 has it from the factory, but it seems to be a software thing as opposed to a hardware thing. it can be turned on and off via the engine mode and furthermore several of the Mercedes tuners can turn it up so its obnoxious.

I am selling my M2 which is a turbo motor that farts when I lift off the gas. It’s really a manufactured sound created by the manufacturer in order to make an otherwise muffled turbo motor sound “cool”. On the M2 you get the pops on sport mode but they go away on sport plus because reality is they mean nothing as far as actual performance goes. I am looking forward to getting my new GT4 because I want a motor that sounds better and better as I keep my foot planted on the gas pedal. As a posed to a car that tries to sound cool when you decelerate.

Which over axle pipes did you install? That will be my first mod but I have not decided who’s pipes to buy. Just curious. Thank you

Which over axle pipes did you install? That will be my first mod but I have not decided who’s pipes to buy. Just curious. Thank you

I purchased the Akrapovic while they were on sale around Christmas. I chose this brand only because of the insulation wrap. I have no idea if it even makes a difference but it does in my mind. I am sure there is not much difference in any of the brands.

This is the same reason I purchased the Akra link pipes. If it came that way from the factory, I want the same level of heat protection. The other option I strongly considered was Soul OAPs, because they'll send the pipes off to JetHot Coatings for an additional fee.

I have the Soul resonated Race exhaust with the Street Headers/high flow cats and I get the occasional pop and gurgle but no where near what I would get in Sport Mode on my 991.2...and I actually like it that way so when I get the Softronic tune I will not tell Scott to add that in, but I will have him disable the ASS function since I hate the 3 cylinder sound!
