Very interesting change in the 2024 model year.

For previous years, if you ordered the rear axle steering option your car came with a lithium ion battery. This brought some charging and maintenance concerns, especially if the car isn't driven daily.

I've read about some attempts to retrofit Anti Gravity batteries to replace the Porsche lithium ion. Not sure if that was ever successful. The Porsche battery replacement is about $2600.

When we got the new car home on Saturday I popped the hood to hook up the lithium ion charger I just bought knowing that the dealer hadn't charged the battery. Surprise - under the hood is an AGM battery!

I reached out to our SA and he was surprised as well. He looked into it and confirmed that 2024 models with RAS now use the AGM battery.

Interesting. I must admit I never really understood why they went together in the first place?

I am definitely not an authority on the topic but...

I've read that it was something to do with voltage regulation. Porsche couldn't get the AGM battery to play nice with the RAS electronics. Again, I read this on the internet, so take with a grain of salt.

For me, I'd prefer the predictability of the AGM battery.

They went to lithium because of a European environmental movement to ban lead in lead batteries. They started with the Cayenne and then all northern 911’s (Canada and Northern Europe). It was a mandatory option with RAS and standard on the “T” in the US. Two major problems with the system as OP notes. So, Porsche returned to the AGM battery for both Cayenne and 911 in 2024.

That's a great update for the 2024 model! Switching from lithium-ion to AGM for RAS-equipped cars is a smart move—simpler maintenance and no charging quirks. Definitely a nice surprise, especially considering the high cost of lithium replacements. Thanks for sharing!
