It seems like this accessory has disappeared. Has anybody seen this around? I can't remember the website and while I've seen Etsy options, nothing is specifically designed for the 718. My rubber one is just too long and takes up lots of space in the filler door cavity.

Are you referring to this company? They made a great product, but unfortunately, went out of business.

It’s like big pharma - develop the drug then find the disease.

My car came with a flap, tastefully screen-printed with a "Oil OK?" reminder. Folks have made their own replacements over the years, sometimes adding more creative statements like "Rear Tires OK?". They use common upholstery vinyl like what you might use to cover a chair, sold by the yard at local fabric stores. For a few dollars, a few minutes with scissors, and a hole punch for the screw holes, you can easily make your own. With early 928's coming up on 50 years old, most of the the original pieces have deteriorated quite a bit.

Meanwhile, a little care in the way I roll the fuel nozzle in and out has worked pretty well at avoiding dribbles. Oregon until very recently has had attendant-only fueling at retail stations. Each episode required a little hands-on counseling to make sure dribbles didn't happen. The flap ends up more as a scratch shield. In the last couple years, the state has relaxed the attendant-only requirement, and allows drivers to fuel their own cars. I think New Jersey is the last holdout for attendant-only fueling in the U.S.. Now that I can reliably get fuel into the car myself, I've moved the flap up so it hangs over the cap rather than dangling underneath. No need to tuck it up when closing the fuel filler door.

If I were subject to attendant-only fueling, I might dream of a decal:

I had one made in leather with crest embossed... Not because I dribble, but because its fun. Why not.

Usually my 'hands-on counselling so drips didn't happen' took the form of "here, let me show you how easy this is!" with the nozzle up, and rolled into the filler. Most attendants were more than happy to let me do it. Once in a while a bit of stubborn would get in the way, but in general it was easy and non-confrontational. For good or bad, the car needs fuel maybe half a dozen times a year here. The state recently relaxed the requirement to allow drivers to do it themselves. Our local stations still require an attendant on duty for folks who don't want touch the nozzle. The closest is busy enough that they always have at least two on duty, even with half of their pumps as self-serve. In more rural Oregon communities with less station traffic, owners can leave the station open for extended hours without an attendant.

I put myself through school holding the tools, and for a while rented workspace at a local service station. That was when 'service' was how a station made money. Our 'full-service' places now are only fuel dispensaries. No air or water available, no window washing, certainly no under-hood fluid level checks. And certainly no actual service or repair options. They will spill gas on the paint if you ask though.

Original on my 1989 rear-tank car. I did move the flap up to the top so it doesn't demand a tuck-up before the gas door will close. It is black vinyl rather than leather, FWIW.
