Has anyone updated their map software in their OEM PCM radio in their 997? I have a 2011 997.2 and I want to update the map software. I don’t want to replace the head unit with a new one and I don’t want to add a module or upgrade to a 3rd party CarPlay unit. I’m not interested in any hardware changes at this time.
I’m interested in hearing from anyone who has actual experience with the process, cost, etc.

I have no experience doing what you seek but others on Carpokes do. One discussion here might get things kicked off for you. (It's in the 718 sub-forum but is speaking generally to PCM and map updates.)

I have no experience with PCM 3 or 3.1. On my 996 Turbo PCM 2 required a new map from DVD. PCM 4 on 982 or 991 you can update the map with an SD card. Good luck

I also have no experience with the earlier PCMs, but if we can determine the model of it, we may be able to help you through it. I've updated maps in my 2018 718 twice, and also in my 2016 Audi A3. I suspect updating your 997 will be similar to the Audi, which I also did with an SD card, but could have done via USB drive or DVD.

I'm tagging @Ken G here, as he may have input on finding the proper maps to load.

One thing to note - the later PCM 4 models can require an update to the firmware to allow "lifetime map updating". This may or may not be an issue on the older PCMs.

@carlb_997 - As an experiment, I tried to re-update the maps in my 2016 Audi, which I believe is similar model hardware as the 997 PCM 3.0. I did this once before, updating the original 2015/16 maps with 2018/19 maps. First thing to note is that the car was still under the original 4-year warranty when I did this. I'm beginning to think that may be important.

Audi (like Porsche) no longer posts map updates for end user download and updating, but the map files are floating around on the internet if you look for them. So today I downloaded the Audi 2024/25 maps, unzipped and transferred them to an SD card, then attempted to load the update. The car recognized there was an update on the card, but would not accept it. The error said "no valid update was found."

I'm pretty sure that what I have is the correct update for the Audi device. But this mirrors what I have heard from others whose PCM systems have not had a firmware update—apparently VAG nav systems will only accept map updates for a limited time, probably to (roughly) correspond with the normal warranty period. My Audi is 8 years old now, and won't accept what looks to be a valid update.

On the 718 and 991.1 cars with PCM 4.0, it's well-known that this restriction exists, but there is a flag in the firmware that can be set to allow "lifetime map updates". There is also a well developed firmware tool for the PCM 4.0, and one of the tasks it does by default is to set the "lifetime updates" flag. This flag is set on my 2018 718 Cayman, and I have updated the maps more than once—most recently a few months ago, over 2 years after warranty expiration.

All this makes me suspect that there may well be a similar restriction on map updates for the PCM 3.0 in your 997. If so, that will complicate things. I see three possible options.

1. Call a Porsche dealer to ask if they still offer and install map updates for your car. This would be the simplest option (if they can still do it), but obviously the most expensive.
2. Identify the hardware/firmware version of your PCM, find map files for it, and attempt to install them via the PCM's software update process. It may be that hardware of your vintage pre-dates the update restriction, and it might load just fine. This would be the most affordable, but will require some research to identify and locate appropriate map files. And of course, it may not work.
3. If neither of these options pan out, last thing would be to hook up with someone semi-local to you who has a coding tool and who might be willing to snoop the internal settings of the PCM to see if the restriction can be removed. But it might be that the older PCM can't be accessed by the coding tools. If so, you may be out of luck.

If you decide to try either option 2 or 3, post back and I (and maybe others) can try to help you through the version identification, locating the proper update files, or to hook you up with a helpful local coder to look into it.

Even the dealer said they have to do some research on this. Appreciate the efforts, folks.

Unfortunate, but not surprising. Worse, I suspect that Porsche might not even offer updates for the 997 maps any longer. And even if the OP wanted to update hardware, the newer Porsche Classic PCM isn't offered for the 997.2, only 997.1.

I suspect that Porsche will continue to update the classic offering. When I saw the update for the 996 I waited eagerly for the 997. (Mine is a 997.1) and had it installed by dealer. It looks OEM so not at all noticeable and works fine for what it is, No wireless AppleTalk but its OK otherwise.
