How long should a key battery last?

I got a dash warning today that says my key battery is low and should be replaced. The car is about 1 year and 4k miles old. Normal? Is it a warranty item if dead so soon? Anyone know what battery it uses?

One year seems a rather short time for the battery life. The battery in my Macan with Comfort Access lasted for 3+ years before it needed replacement.

The battery life most likely depends on how often / long it communicates with the car. Do you leave the key in the garage near the car?

I noticed that with comfort access the batteries work harder. So for my bimmers, they usually last about 3-4years. But that is not constant use though.

Mine lasted for 2 years (992 C4S) . But I‘m using (in app. 50%) also keyless-entry.

You have got to keep the Key Fob fairly far away from the car when it's not in use. With my 992 parked in the garage and the Key Fob inside the house but in a room adjacent to the garage . . . . . 3 - 4 months. You absolutely have to keep them far enough apart so the car and the Key Fob can't be whispering to each other.

Yeah, I just learned the hard way. Took delivery in early June and both are almost dead sitting inside the doorway! The nice thing is that my service manager said to bring them by and he would replace the batteries at no charge.

If you use the remote a lot to either close the convertible/windows it will use more energy and therefore last shorter.

If helpful to anyone, I ended up writing this DIY guide on replacing the battery.

It's quite easy once you know how. Being lazy, this was quicker and easier than a drive to the dealer for me...
