I’ve been tracking my 1979 Euro 928 for over 25 years. It has many upgrades that made it a very fun car. I purchased it race prepared, it included; interior removed, racing seats, 5-point harness, MSDS headers and 4 inch single pipe custom exhaust, full race cage, upgraded 928 S4 Brembo brakes, Devek front sway bar, Louie Ott rear sway bar kit. I upgraded it with a “hybrid 5-liter” motor consisting of a 1985 US 5-liter block and installed 1980 Euro S high flow heads/cams, intake runners and throttle body. The original CIS fuel injection was retained. A 1985 G28/11 transaxle was also installed (required the 1985 torque tube too). An Accusump supplemental oil pressure accumulator was installed to reduce the 2/6 rod bearing failures that many 928s suffered on the track.

When my street 1979 928 suffered a head gasket failure, I decided to take the best parts of my 1979 track car and move them into my 1979 street car. I’d get over 100 more horsepower with the upgrade to S4 brakes. Essentially I’d have a superior 1986.5-ish Porsche 928. As part of the upgrade I’m installing the superior Hans SerVaas shifter linkage and Black Sea research SuperBearings in the torque tube.

Beginning mid-March 2026 many of the unneeded take-off parts will be available for sale.

The work will be done at Exotic Motorwerks in Scottsdale, AZ. Exotic can rebuild and reconstruct take-off parts if desired. Please make PM or contact electronikrepair [at] earthlink.net for further information.

Many used parts from both cars will be available for purchase. If there is interest, I’ll assemble a full A/T to 5-speed manual (Limited Slip) conversion kit. It will directly fit the 1978 – 1979 928s. With the use of the 1978 – 1979 rear cross member P/N 928-331-131-17 and 928-332-033-30 axle shafts installed this 5-speed drivetrain will fit into a 1980 or newer cars (up to 1984, possibly 1985). As the work progresses, I’ll have a full list of available used parts.

The track car tub (rolling or non-rolling) has stripped interior, two racing seats (need reupholstering), two 5-poing harnesses, no door windows but light weight Lexan rear windows and hatch window. This would be great to get a wrecked track car back in use.

Other than the head gasket failure (external oil leak, left front), the red car 1979 4.5-liter M/28-3 engine was in fine shape and was recently sold as a short-block. The heads and cam towers are available.

Hi Rich -- very happy to have you here on Carpokes. Thank you for joining and participating. I'm a long-time 944 turbo guy myself and always thought there was a missed opportunity for the 928 and 944 crowds to compare notes. dr bob has been leading the charge here on that, and love that he invited you over. I'd LOVE to get more of the 928 crowd engaged here. Get this -- we're drama free. I send out periodic newsletters via email, and am overdue for one now, so will include a plug for your parts. Great way to get a for sale ad in front of thousands of eyes all at once. Welcome aboard!

Thanks Tom!

I found a good home for my short block and hope more 928s will run with these take-off parts.

I've done some work on our 2009 Base Cayenne (VR6 engine, 211,000 miles on it) and look forward to good discussions in that forum too.

The short block that recently sold from my red car was in excellent condition. The block of 928s will last a good long time with proper oil change intervals.
