Header heat shield

I’ve been imagining this for a while and finally got it in the car. It’s a simple 6x18” sheet of thin aluminum I got at Lowes for $13, so definitely nothing fancy. One straight bend and a lot of hand forming, especially on the rear edge. Any input/suggestions welcome!

Interesting. Looks like its not supported on the outboard side. Given that its aluminum, any concerns for cracking at the mount points?

I took a slightly different approach with a heat blanket:

Good point about it cracking, and no it’s not supported on the outboard side. I guess time will tell how well it holds up. I like the heat blanket idea! Much easier to handle than a rigid sheet of aluminum

That's a good idea. Porsche makes one, too. For some reason it was only installed on the auto trans 944. See #13 in this diagram;

Yup, I looked at that before making mine. As I understand it, the OE shield on AT cars is there to keep the ATF lines cool rather than protect the whole area from the headers. I wanted to keep the fuel lines cooler and also channel any leaking fuel away from the headers

RS Barn made one, I have it fitted on my 944. It has a thermal material on the hot side and it arrives with a film on it to prevent scratches. Not sure how effective it is on my car but RS Barn had tested a decent reduction in under bonnet temps.

That looks really nice! Much nicer than mine lol. I'll have to look it up and see if they're still making them, or at least try to copy it next time I do this

Gave a go at it. I did notice it helped engine bay temps a bit.

Very clean! Is that a rolled top edge I see?

Yup, I gave the edge that mounts to the coolant tube a roll over to try and double up the strength.
Didn't want to spam too many photos in my original post.

It is aluminum so I hope it can hold up to a bit of abuse.
