I don't know if it still matters but if you talk to IMI, they offer a couple of different clockings for the 928, since folks were also worried about it hanging low on those cars, as well. Through trusted friends and Porsche people, my impression is that the IMI folks are good about understanding and supporting users of their products.

I have one of their starters on a spare 928 engine, if you'd like to see pictures. That's probably a winter project, if I can work through some of the other things I've been planning.

Cheers

I got a similar gear-reduction starter for our Jensen-Healey roadster from a Lotus parts supplier, so that part may have been meant for a mid-engine Esprit application. The flange to the engine block came with a similar array of mounting bolt holes as in the IMI 944 starter pictured in the Pelican link below, 3 or 4 different options, but they were not arrayed not all the way around the flange. It wasn't possible to achieve a good orientation for proper connection of the B+ terminal without it running too close to the engine block, so I had a local machine shop drill additional holes along the periphery of the mounting circle and was able to achieve an acceptable mounting configuration.

The downside of this style of gear reduction starter is in the 924/944/968/928 configuration, it is the larger motor portion and not the solenoid that hangs lowest. Perhaps modifying the flange and the wiring can achieve a configuration with better ground clearance.

Here are some pictures of the Hi-Torque starter on a 1986 turbo. You can see from the side picture that the starter is well above the exhaust and even the stock heat shields. The Hi-Tourque starter is shorter than the original Bosch starter and one heat shield isn’t able to attach at the end of the starter, but it feels very solid and I do not expect any issues with it. Just getting this car on the road, but so far very happy with this starter.

Is that a modded OEM heat shield or did you custom fab that?

Good evening,

It is the original heat shield with an adhesive heat shield material attached to it. Trying to keep the starter as cool as I can.
