My new engine is already on the way and he said once it is delivered he will call me so I can go up and look at it. I'm curious as to how much of a "new engine" I'll be getting, long block, short block, something else? I can't imagine it will be totally complete, but we'll see.
Bill, are they going to offer an extended warranty for the engine like they did for the conrod engines?

I haven't gotten around to asking that yet, but the sales manager told me when he first spoke to me on the phone that he was reporting to Porsche that I was "irate" over the situation. I'm not, and he knows it, but he thinks they may go further in offering some sort of compensation if it is reported that way. I'm hoping for at least the 8 year extended engine warranty, not sure what else might be offered, but I'm certainly going to discuss this before the process is over.

I would hope the new engine comes as one big assembled motor ready to pop in. The more the dealer has to assemble, the more I'd want warranties, vouchers, etc. When my brother's f150 engine imploded, Ford sent out a totally complete motor with accessories, etc. They said it wasn't worth the cost of labor, let alone the possibility of damage or error, in trying to swap over parts. For warranty work like this, where Porsche has an interest in getting to the bottom of it, I'd be surprised if they don't send over a Lego-like motor that snaps in without much reliance on local (random) engine building skill. Fingers crossed.....

Yes, that is my hope as well. I can see it coming without the alternator, etc. but also coming complete and ready to "drop in" (although it doesn't "drop" but rather is raised into position). It's complicated enough getting everything connected as it is without adding the necessity of putting on a bunch of ancillary parts, so I hope your assessment is correct and it's got everything needed to run once hooked up.

The nice part is that your dealer is keeping you in the loop. In this market, if you don't like what they do to fix it, you can probably sell it with full disclosure for what you paid, if not more. But I honestly doubt you'll need/want to. I'm guessing they send the whole enchilada....

My salesman told me once the new engine is received he will call me to come up and take a look at it. He also said they will look into it a bit more to see if they can determine the cause of the problem. It will then be shipped back for complete teardown. My new one is in transit now.

An update on the progress of my 718 GTS repair:
The dealer sales mgr. called today to tell me good news/bad news.  The bad:  The engine that was enroute to the dealership for my car was condemned(Porsche's terminology)  because the oil pump is suspect.
Good news:  An engine is enroute from Germany on a boat, scheduled to arrive in the US next week.  However, with the backlog at the ports it is unknown how long before it will be unloaded and on the way to the dealer.
As to compensation, he gave suggestions that I might be able to get from Porsche NA of a CPO warranty on top of the new car warranty, and a 3 year free maintenance contract.  I mentioned to him the 8 year engine warranty offered to owners of cars with the con rod issue, and he said he would inquire about that also.  I think I'd rather have the CPO as it will cover everything on the car, and the prospects of my owning the car for six years are probably now high. If they combine the CPO and the 3 yr. maintenance I think that is a good deal, and I might be able to get them to throw in a voucher for the PEC as well, worth the ask.

Sorry to hear that Bill. :( Has Porsche published anything about the oil pump issue, like they did the con rod? If not, you have to wonder if that's coming...

At least they realized the new motor was suspect before they put it in -- that's way better than getting it back and having the same thing happen again in a few weeks/months. CPO and 3-year maintenance sounds pretty good to me too, though if you can get 8 on the motor and a voucher, why not... I hope they gave you a loaner in the meantime? I actually look forward to the loaners I get when servicing my car, as it gives me a chance to drive Porsches I otherwise would never drive.

p.s., doesn't sound like you are 'there' yet, but many states have lemon laws that can be triggered not only by repeated attempts to fix something, but also when a car is out of service for more than a certain number of days (often 30). Porsche might argue Force Majeure due to port shortages, etc., but I doubt they'd even fight since they could sell it in a heartbeat if they bought it back....
