Hello! New to the forum and figured I'd finally get around to making a thread for my current project. It's a 1987 951 that was originally built in the late 90's with a turbo 3.0L and a whole bunch of other stuff. I didn't need another 944 project when this popped up for sale but it was too good of a deal to pass up, unfortunately the previous owner spun it into a tire wall on the track so the drivers side of the car is pretty beat. After that it appears to have sat for at least ten years since it was driven regularly. I was optimistic that the engine would be good but it's burning about a quart of oil every 50 miles so I think its well overdue for the full treatment.

So here goes the rebuild, my goal is to make a mechanically sorted street car that I don't have to worry about looking good. Im hoping to make around 400hp with the 3.0 once it's all back together. The start of this thread might be a little jumbled while I catch up on the stuff that I've done over the past year but after that I'll try and at least add a weekly update. Hopefully this keeps me accountable enough to keep some steady progress going on the car.

I'm super excited to get this car going again, I've been caught up with other projects for the past 2 years since I bought it originally so I've had plenty of time to think of stuff to do with this car.
It looks to have been all over the States, originally built in Texas, and made it's way up the east coast to New York, then to Idaho, and finally to Seattle with me. If anybody recognizes this car I would love to know more about its past! I found these pics of it from a 2010 for sale ad on Rennlist, but aside from that I only have bits and pieces of the history.

I'll try and add a few more posts in the next couple days with more photos and with all of the things I've done so far, hopefully this can serve as a good Log book of sorts for this project.

Very cool project! Thank you for posting the photos and the start of the rebuild journey. It's a great title for the thread and for your online logbook which will also be helpful to others who've been through the same or are contemplating their own restoration.

Welcome to Carpokes!

Awesome! Project threads are the best! I also have a red 3L 951:) If you post some engine shots, it might give us clues as to who build it. Also, who was the seller on Rennlist? I had a log of 3L motors build around that era, so might have some high level info/data on that motor. :)

P.s. the body work looks like it will buff right out. ;)

Nice project.

Does the car have a Motec M4 on it?
Would you post a picture of the boost gauge pod?
Did Bob Norwood do any work on it?
What suspension on it?
Does it have a retrofit ABS setup?
Big reds?
Recaro Pole Position?

This car looks very familiar. around 1999-2001, I owned one like it (maybe the same one?).

I believe the last picture you post it is when it was advertised in Charleston SC next to a silver rose (repainted black) with a 3.0L as well.

That sounds like the car! It's still got the ABS, Big reds, It's got a pair of SR2's in it now. I found some papers in the binder that mentioned a Motec but it was running on a Vipec V88 when I got it. The suspension it's on now appears to be M030 koni yellows, but they've got adjustments that I haven't seen before on any other koni's.
I'll try and find a picture of the boost gauge pod.
I'm pretty sure he did do some work on this car, I have a few receipts from him but the paperwork doesn't actually describe much of the work that was done.
I was surprised that the ABS wasn't factory! Didn't realize until I had the carpet pulled up that it was retrofitted!

If the boost gauge was custom built attached to the cage, then it's my old car.

I can share all sort of information. It's a shame how it looks now, it was show quality when I owned it. I noticed someone changed the wheels, I'll have to look for pictures from back then.

If you want, send me an email with your phone # and best time to call.

BTW the rear coilovers were for a mustang. (That's before Koni offered the rear adjustable ones).

Wish I had better shots of the engine bay before I started dis-assembly, It fell victim to some parts robbing a few times for my other turbo while it was waiting its turn in the garage.

Got the engine, transmission dropped out with relatively few problems, this is my first big project using the lift and OMG its so much nicer than doing it on the ground. The lift is worth every penny just for this job.

Everything is pretty crusty but dry, this is the only 944 turbo I've ever seen that wasn't just an oil bloodbath underneath. Didn't leak a drop on the floor, fingers crossed I can maintain that once it's back together.

hmm, I think I recognize this car too! probably means I ran into you out climbing relatively shortly after you got it?

Also quite surprised at how dry it is. I have to imagine if you'd run it a bit that might've changed...

in any case, very glad to see you drop by here :D
