Update

Managed to get a second hand handle. Swapped out the barrell and other parts Along with a new lever catch. Fitted back on today and all works well.

The short answer is that your door handle is worn out. The working surfaces of the handle itself have worn through the black anodizing and have lost motion at the critical part where the trigger moves the rest of the linkage.
